Ode to Spring and Other Good Things

Soft strains of country music float up from laptop speakers

Warm air tickles studious faces

A soccer ball is kicked across the field by muddy cleats

Thoughts of cotton candy and summer nights float through the air

Daydream of campfire and picnics in the sun

The last days of formal education rushing by

An ode to spring

Sunshine streaming through open windows

Grass blowing softly in the breeze

The sound of human interaction: laughter, squeals, shouts of delight

People, young and old, dazed by the beauty of spring infatuation

twitterpated;

Love seems so much stronger when everything's green

Kites and birds rally for airspace

The birds win

The ocean calls the wanderer to enter its embrace

The wanderer hesitates-

His heart is with the ocean

But his mind is saying

Stay, stay, stay

Stay where it is safe

Where the chill of winter holds you captive

Where the sly warmth of spring tempts you

To fall in love, to chase your dreams and come up empty

Stay.

But the wanderer goes

He steps into the ocean and is whisked away

By the joy of new spring

The excitement of newness

Of happiness

Of green

Wanderer, teach me your joy
