I have lived in Ventura most of my life, I was born in San Francisco but when my mom died my dad decided it would be best to get out of the city and get a fresh perspective. That perspective has lasted 18 years I guess. I'm now a junior at Ventura college; Physic Major. All of that is besides the point because it's a beautiful day in southern California that I get to spend with my girlfriend Taylor who's visiting from UCLA this weekend.
"Eli come look at this!" Taylor says standing in front of a jewelry booth on the pier. She held up a bracelet with beads and shells.
"It's so cute, buy it for me. I'll take it back to LA with me and always have something to remind me of you." she said.
Taylor always was into the stupid stuff like that. The little tokens of affections and crap. Honestly it didn't matter much to me but it mattered to her which in turn meant in mattered to me. I handed the vendor 5 dollars and Taylor wrapped me in a hug. I looked down at her.
"I'm gonna miss you" she says " Finials are coming up and the busy season at the café is starting up, I wont be able to get back down here for a while."
"I'll miss you too." I smile at her and give her a squeeze.
Me and Taylor spent the rest of the night together and I gave her a kiss when she left back for the city in the morning. Me and her had a good relation ship, no rocky waters just easy sailing. Honestly I thought it was weird how well we got along. I got ready to go to work at the beach shack. I packed a lunch and headed down two blocks to the pier from my apartment.
I walked in and a little bell range as I walked in.
"Hey Jake, how's it going buddy?" I ask as I walk in the door
Jake was probably my best friend in this town we met here at the shack when we were both applying for summer jobs our senior year. We've been best buds ever since.
" Good for me cause I don't have to work the parlor today." he said with a smirk.
The shack had a small little ice cream parlor at the back. Little kids would come in and out all day and never fail to leave me with a head ache.
" Jesus I Hate the parlor" I mumbled under my breathe as I walked to the back. during my sulking someone came in I heard the bell ring up front. Burst of giggles ran through the store.
"Cas I'm gonna go get some ice cream." someone said.
I got my scoop ready waiting for whoever was making their way back here. Then just like that the most beautiful girl I had ever seen in my entire life made her way toward me. Her long legs elegantly took each step and matched in pace with the swish of her mess of curls that hung past her shoulders. She offered me a wide smile. All I offered was a gaping mouth. she didn't seemed phased though, how could she, look at her she was a perfect ten. Then I remembered Taylor and snapped my mouth shut.
"Hey, what would ya like" I finally said.
she stood on her toes too examine all the flavors we had.
"Can I have strawberry and mint please." she smiled that smile of hers she looked so damned happy.
"of course" I said with a smile regaining a bit of confidence. I looked up and saw Jake smirking at me from the front of the store. I handed the girl her ice cream and tried making small talk while I rang her up.
"So Ventura doesn't get a lot of visitors, mostly locals, you just move?" I asked. A part of me was hoping for her to say yes cause I wanted to get to know her, I thought of Taylor again and felt slightly guilty.
"No" she said " I am actually just stopping by, probably wont stay here long, heading up coast." she handed me her money.
"This place is cool though, quiet and peaceful. Probably get a lot of time to your self." she said sort of like a question but more of a statement.
"yeah its a nice place to get a breather from everything." I said
"but a person can only take that so long." she said.
" That is very true" I said.
As she was walking away she turned around and looked at me.
"Well if you want to try holding your breath for a night come by Elmhurst street at around 11:30" she said and turned around again walking out of the store.
My first and only thought was I was going,
