Being pulled out of her sleep by a nightmare, Nova opened her eyes and sat up gasping for air as it felt like she had been robbed of all the oxygen in the world.
It had been a week now since the mission she had been hired to do had gone horribly wrong. The building she had tried to get all those people out of had blown up, killing everyone remaining in it except her. And the guilt- it was devouring the nineteen year old from the inside.
Cold sweats covered her entire body and she pushed the silken sheets off her body. She was wearing a white tank top and underwear, not caring as she was alone in the apartment located in Russia. Nova wasn't planning on going back to America until she was needed or the boss told her that she had to.
It felt like a warm, rising fever was circling through her limbs and settling to taunt her in her chest as she walked in the studio apartment to the kitchen that was in the same room as the bed- and living room. Nova grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it up with water, drinking it all up greedily. It was four in the morning and she knew that she wouldn't fall back asleep for a long time.
A knock on the door pulled her out of her absent state of mind, grabbing a gun with shaking hands on the way out she stood on her tiptoes to look out the keyhole. Natalia. A sigh of relief escaped the brunette as she opened the door for the blonde woman. "Kakoy?" Nova asked sharply. Natalia only smirked and walked inside without an invitation. "Utro ustalo? Pochemu ty voobshche ne spish' v takiye chasy??"
["what?" "Morning tired? Why are you even awake at such hours?"]Nova rolled her eyes at the blonde, closing the door behind her and going over to her closet to put on a pair of pants. "Aș putea să vă întreb același lucru" she said, looking over at Nat. "YA mog by sprosit' tebya o tom zhe" the blonde woman said making the assassin raise her eyebrows in a silent question. "Zachem?" She started to ask, going over to the kitchen again to finish her other glass of water.
["I could ask you the same thing" "Well said, I'm here to check on you" "Why?"]"Ya vsego lish' oruzhiye, u nas net nikakikh chuvstv" Nova said, suddenly craving something stronger than water. But she had finished the vodka she had bought the night before. Natalia rolled her eyes at that, straightening out the black, skin tight dress she was wearing. "You're more than a weapon, you're my assassin" her Russian accent was heavy as she spoke in English.
["I am just a weapon, I don't feel"]Nova didn't know what to say to that, she didn't want to feel. She wanted to be a cold weapon or she might die. She was closer to that than she could've imagined. "Nat- it's- shut up I'm no one's assassin, many people hire me" she hated that the use of mine had an effect on her. "Nova-" the blonde woman started but was cut off by the assassin. "No, why are you here? Really."
Natalia sighed, leaning against one of the counters in the smaller sized studio apartment. Nova didn't take her eyes off her as the future mafia ruler... queen looked around before her brown eyes met her assassin's. "I am here for you, you and I are going out now" Nova raised her eyebrows in question and opened her mouth to protest. "No protest, we're leaving in five minutes. I will see you down at the car" the woman's accent was strong as she talked and it was demanding making Nova comply after the blonde was out of the apartment.
Nova rolled her eyes, grabbing a jacket and boots, pulling them on as she almost stumbled out of the apartment. She locked the door before heading down the stairs, seeing Natalia standing by a car. "Will you at least tell me where we are going?" She asked, her voice replicating the tiredness she was feeling. "Not yet".
She watched as Natalia got into the car without another word, Nova sighed and followed suit. The car at least offered some warmth that the cold winter weather outside did not think twice about doing. But still, Nova wasn't prepared to leave. As much as she hated the weather, Russia was ten times better than her cell-like apartment in the facility.
The car ride was silent even though Nova's nerves was definitely going to break through the roof. The car came to a stop and she looked over at Nat who spoke up "Wait here" her accent was quite bad as she never really needed to speak good English for communication.
Nova reluctantly did as she said, taking off her seatbelt but staying in the car. It was quiet outside, the darkness still laying over this side of the world as a thick blanket. But it was still relatively light outside because of the snow and street lights that shone down on the white layer.
The assassin's eyes followed the future leader as she walked inside of an older looking building. It had artistic design to it that reminded her of Romantic epochs in history.
She wasn't sure how much time had passed before Natalia was back and knocking on the car window on Nova's side. Nova opened up the door and gave her a bit of an annoyed look "Am I allowed to get out of the car yet, ma'am?" She asked and Nat only rolled her eyes and stepped to the side so that she could get out.
When she was out of the car she could get a better view of the building and if she had to take a guess she would say that it looked like some sort of museum.
"Follow me" Nat said before taking Nova's wrist and pulling her along, she didn't see any point in fighting it so she followed her newfound friend into the building. Once again thanking whoever invented the radiator. Nova stomped off the snow that had gotten stuck to her boots and then looked around. It was even more stunning from the inside.
There was paintings on the ceiling and it made Nova think of a church but they were still different in a way that she was unable to truly describe with words.
"Come on" Nat brought her out of her haze and she smiled a bit. It was the first time in a week if not more. Nova let her guide her into what seemed to be the first room and that's when she knew it wasn't a museum. It was an art gallery. The smile grew on her lips and she let her eyes move over the different paintings nailed to the wall "How did you get us in here so early?" She asked, looking over at Nat "Someone owed me a favor"
Nova didn't say anything else and approached the first painting. It was of some sort of dark landscape, it was like watching someone's story. That's why she not only enjoyed drawing and painting but also art in general. It was something disturbing yet beautiful with watching someone's life work. And that it wasn't all positive or romanticized, it was painted with ugly strokes, rough edges and simple looking frames. That made it feel even more realistic somehow.
She didn't say much more as the two young women slowly made their ways through the rooms, appreciating every individual painting.
At some point while circling the room in two different directions, they met and stood together, watching the story of a battlefield. "The art, it's beautiful" Nat breathed out and Nova nodded, not taking her eyes off the piece until the blonde spoke again "Like you" she looked over at her with a confused expression.
Nova watched Nat move but didn't register what she was doing until she felt her hand on her cheek and the other woman's lips against hers. Her eyes widened ever so slightly, her breathing coming to a stop in a panicked way. She hadn't known Natalia liked her in this way. Maybe she should've been more observant, the signs were all there.
She pulled away, stammering out a "I- I can't do this" Nova backed away, a frightened expression on her face. She couldn't allow herself to care for Nat. "I'm sorry" she apologized but it was too late. This was the first time she had ever seen Natalia look so unsure of herself. "It's fine, I just picked up on the wrong signals" Nova bit herself in the cheek, painfully. She didn't know what she could say next not to ruin what she and Nat have "I- didn't-" why couldn't she think of anything? She always had something to say- "I'll give you a ride back to your apartment" And with that Nat was leaving.
And Nova was left all alone again.
