Chapter 2
"Accidents Happen"
The morning sun streams warm golden light into my room. The harsh beams direct themselves through my window, covering my face as I lay sleeping. I close my eyes tightly as the intense light streams into my eyes. Rolling over I take my blanket, pulling it up and over my head to shield my face. I grown as I begin to awaken from my sleep. For a few minutes I lie, wrapped in my warm blankets, trying to gain the strength to crawl out of bed.
Yawning, I stretch my arms above my head before reluctantly slipping out from under my covers. A shiver quickly runs down my back as I step over to my wardrobe, the cool air in my room contrasting with the previous warmth of my sheets. My toes scrunch at the feeling of the cold floor beneath me.
Changing, I put on a simple ash blue colored dress, the dark leather belt I had on the past night now firmly wrapped around my waist. Before I can forget, I grab my satchel off of my night stand, slipping it over my head. My eyes linger on the old letter that sits on the wooden table, before I quickly turn away, not allowing myself to dwell on the thin sheet of paper.
Standing in front of my mirror, I fix my hair, holding it up with a clip given to me by my uncle Eli. He had given me this clip for my birthday a few years ago. The brass clip holds my dark locks from getting in the way, aside for a few strands that slip out, framing my face. My hands reach down, picking up a brown pair of boots. I place them on my feet, now ready to start my day. I grip the strap of my bag, breathing in a deep breath I mentally prepare myself for the day ahead.
Leaving my room I trail down the halls of the castle. I glance out one of the many windows, taking in the view of the beautiful morning sky. Light pours into the castle, painting the stone floors and walls in a gorgeous orange hue. The clear sky allows me to see the large mountains in the distance, on the other side of the city. Snow drapes itself atop the mountain peaks, reminding me of the naturally cold winter that approaches. Soon autumn will be upon us, the weather has already begun dropping in temperature slightly. It may be subtle, but anyone who has lived here long enough knows not to underestimate the harsh weather that will come in due time.
I proceed to make my way to the kitchen. My plan being that I'll have a small breakfast with Charity and then continue to help my uncle. The sound of my boots tapping along the floor as I walk down a flight of stairs fills the narrow walkway. I rest my hands on the soft leather strap of my bag, humming a gentle tune as I walk.
Upon entering the doorway of the kitchen a group of maids approach me holding platters of delicious looking food. I quickly step out of their way apologizing. Turning back to look into the kitchen I spot Charity standing across the room washing the counter spaces. She doesn't notice me as I step down a pair of stone slabs, fully entering the room.
In the room are a few more people cleaning up after the meal they had just prepared, the pleasant smell still in the air. I take in the wonderful scent of eggs, bacon, potatoes and fresh bread. I begin to realize how hungry I am.
Approaching Charity quietly, I plan to scare her. Silently, I step behind her. She hums quietly to herself, unsuspecting of my plans. I lean my head over, hovering just above her shoulder. A grin creeps onto my face as I try to hold back my laughter. Charity halts her movements, most likely sensing my presents. Before I let her discover my position on her own, I whisper.
"Good morning." Charity squeals, dropping the rag she had previously clutched in her hand. Spinning on her heel she turns to face me, a hand on her chest. Her wide eyes make contact with mine, she sighs, slouching against the counter behind her. I laugh as she glares at me.
