CHAPTER 1
There was gunfire in the halls, followed by pounding footsteps and yelled commands as people ran by the door to her cell.
The guard whose turn it was to watch her waved his gun at her and snarled, "Don't move!"
As if she could somehow get past him and run out the door. She'd tried before, her head still ached from the last time they slammed her onto the floor after they'd caught her. She'd lost track of how long she'd been stuck in this cell, alone, surrounded by men who terrified her. She wasn't sure if the gunfire she was hearing should give her hope or scare her even more. Part of her felt that it didn't matter anymore anyway. She was never getting out, and even if she managed it, it would just be a death sentence for someone that she loved.
She dropped her eyes back down and focused on the pile of white powder on the ground in front of her, her vision shifted as she focused on the geometric patterns in the powder, then, with a simple thought, she turned something harmless into something deadly.
The door to the cell slammed open, and a masked man in a black tactical suit burst in moving so fast she could barely track his movements. The guard turned to look at the door and brought up his gun to shoot but it was too late. The man struck the guard across the face with a metal rod while knocking the gun out of the guard's hand. Before the gun hit the ground the man had wrapped his arms around the guard's throat, cutting off the guard's airflow until he collapsed. He lowered the passed-out guard to the ground, looked at her, and seemed about to speak.
She saw movement from the hallway, "Behind you!"
His head whipped around as something landed in her cell. The next thing she knew he was rushing towards her, picking her up and lunging towards the ground near the wall of the cell. He covered her body with his own as an earth-shaking explosion shattered her hearing,
"You ok?" He asked. His voice was not too deep and was full of concern for her.
"Yes, I think so."
"Good, stay here, I'll be right back." Then he moved so fast that the guards who had been waiting for the smoke from the explosion to clear never saw what hit them. Within seconds both guards were lying unmoving on the ground.
She sat up, still stunned by the explosion, and noticed the piles of rubble all around. The walls of the cell had been ripped apart, some of the ceiling had dropped onto the floor and the old mattress she'd been forced to sleep on had been reduced to scraps of fabric that were strewn across her cell. Another masked person in black walked into the cell and stood by the man that had thrown himself on top of her. The newcomer was obviously a woman, no baggy vest or shirt could completely hide her curves.
"Everyone safe?" The newcomer asked.
"Yeah, I think that's all of them," he answered.
"Good." The newcomer pulled off her mask and walked into the cell. She was tall, her blonde hair was short and spiky and her eyes were pale blue. The man that had saved her walked down the hall and disappeared out of view.
"Hi, I'm Jessie," the woman said as she crouched down and started pulling a bottle of water out of a pouch on her belt. "Are you ok? Do you want something to drink?"
She was so thirsty; they'd only given her a small glass of water every four or five hours since they'd kidnapped her. "Yes, thank you." She should be feeling something, hope or fear, but she was too exhausted. All she really wanted was to feel the cold water sliding down her throat.
