The next morning, you were feeling much better. It's almost strange, how quickly you recovered.

Ah... that's right, you had work today. Yesterday, you had called in sick, but you couldn't afford to miss another day. To be perfectly honest, you really didn't want to go, but alas, capitalism enslaves us all.

You sighed, rubbing the sleepiness out of your eyes as you got dressed. Let's see... some coffee should wake you up. You didn't really have time to eat breakfast, so you'd just eat during your lunch break.

Your stomach growled in protest. You hadn't eaten dinner the night before, either, so you were starving. Perhaps you could afford to be a little late so you didn't pass out from hunger while serving a customer.

You opted for a quick sandwich, and brought it with you as you hurried towards the bus.

Once you arrived at your job, you had finished the sandwich. You brushed crumbs off of your uniform and headed in.

You worked at a popular cafe, famous for their various drinks, which meant you got quite a bit of customers. On the bright side, this meant you knew a lot of drink recipes, so you could make them at home. If you ever had the energy to do it, that is.

"Ah, [NAME]! There you are!" Your manager called out to you. She gestured for you to come over, with someone you didn't recognize next to her.

"You've been working here long enough, you should know enough about the job, right?" The older woman clasped her hands together. "This is Silio, a new hire. Show him around, will you?"

"Oh... uh, sure." You awkwardly scratched the back of your head as your manager wandered off, presumably to talk one of your coworker's ear off.

"Hi! You're [NAME], right?" Silio piped up. Now that you took a good look at him, he was pretty cute, with dyed-pink fluffy hair and violet eyes. He also had a cheerful expression on his face, a rare sight nowadays.

"Yeah, that's me. Welcome to the job, I guess." You tried to crack a smile at the newbie.

Hopefully he didn't feel too pressured. "It's your first day on the job, right? If you need help, call me. Not while I'm on my break, though."

"Okay! I'll do my best!" Silio replied, eyes shining. What an innocent look. Too bad working customer service would kill that spirit.

You shrugged, and headed over to your place at the front of the cafe. Usually, you opted to make drinks and prepare food instead of having to interact with people, but today there were simply too many customers for you to get away with that.

"Hi, how can I help you?" You greeted your first customer of the day with a practiced smile.
It felt like years before you got to your lunch break.

You sat down at one of the tables outside and pulled out your bag. You had packed some chicken nuggets for today, with some sauce on a mini-container. It may seem childish, but they were easy to prepare and a good source of protein. At least, that was your excuse. Really, you just liked them.

You started to eat when you felt someone's eyes on you. You glanced up to see Silio heading your way.

"Kid, I told you not to bother me while im having lunch." You deadpanned.

Silio huffed. "I'm not a kid! I'm 23! And besides, I just wanted to hang out with you!"

You paused. "Please don't tell me you're avoiding work on your first day."

"I'm not! It's my break, too!"

"Well..." you sighed. You seemed to be doing that a lot lately. "Alright, take a seat. What'd you bring?"

"Bring?" Silio tilted his head.

"You know... for lunch?"

Silio paled. "Th-they don't provide that?"

You stifled a laugh. "They do not. Look, do you want some of mine? I have, like... an apple you can have. It's not much, but it'll keep you from starving."

Silio lit up. "Really? You're my hero! I owe you my life!"

"Sure, just eat up. I'll be leaving soon, so you better ask for help while you still can."

The two of you chatted for a bit, and eventually exchanged numbers. Once work was over, you headed home.

The sun was setting already... you felt exhausted. You had to deal with quite a few difficult customers today, which was always draining.

Suddenly, your phone buzzed.

Silio: [NAME] !! did you head home already?
You: yeah. how was your first day at work?
Silio: soooo tiring! my body feels so heavy!

You snorted at that. Had this guy never worked at a job before?

Ah, well. Tomorrow you had a day off, so maybe you'd use that as an opportunity to get some groceries. You were running low on food, after all.

It was an exciting day, meeting a new friend.

You wondered what tomorrow would bring...
