Sometimes the hopeful side of your brain can play tricks on you by ignoring and blocking the more important things. My parents had just told me we are moving to New York instead of buying me a new car. At this moment, I could only process the disappointment. Yesterday when I walked by Mom and Dad's closed bedroom door, I overheard them talking about a new car; and I had assumed it was for me due to the previous conversation we discussed a month ago.
"So, I'm not getting a new car?" The words came out of my mouth as soon as the other news registered. Mom and dad shifted in their seats. And with all the straight A's I have, it still took me thirty seconds to process it. Disbelief hit me. No. I must've heard them incorrectly. I'm still waiting for the joke to come and for them to say "April fool!" although it is mid-March.
Breaking the silence, Jimmy jumped out of his seat and punched the air, missing his cup of water by an inch.
"Jimmy, careful." Mom said. I can see her face relaxing a fraction. At least someone was happy about this news. Of course he is. He's eight. Also, he was an outspoken kid. Never had trouble making new friends.
"Yes! We're moving to New York!" He danced in the kitchen and moon walked across the kitchen floor before doing a one foot twirl.
"Dad, I can't move. There's only four months of school left. Please tell me it's going to be after I graduate high school at least so that I can get settled into a college." He waited too long to answer and that single shift of his eye to mom verified the worst would be most likely to happen. I will have to transfer school.
"Your Mom got an offer for a position she's been wanting for for years as a designer assistant. If she doesn't take it, who knows when the next offer will be." That's great news for her, but it was playing tug of war with the bad news on my side of the fence. Jimmy jumped on mom and hugged her with both arms around her waist.
"Congrats Mom. That mean we are going soon? Like next month?" Jimmy asked her and gave me his apologetic eyes before glancing back at his food. I wanted to congratulate Mom, but the words would not flow. It will have to be sincere, that isn't filled with anxiety and resistance.
"When?" My voice came out more stern than I had expected.
"Mom starts next week, and my boss allowed me to transfer to one of our departments in New York, but it has to be within two weeks." My jaw dropped, and I couldn't believe it.
"Dad! That's too soon." I yelled.
"I don't... I can't move by next week."
Am I going to have to transfer school? What about my friends? Am I going to have to go to prom with strangers? The thought was distasteful. I move there and come back for college here? That's extreme. I shut down my thoughts and rubbed my temples before I went crazy with this madness.
"Hear us out." He exchanged a look with mom again. Mom gave him the go to take the lead in the conversation.
"Your mom, Jimmy and I are moving to New York, and you, too but only if you want to go."
"Wha..." the word stick to my lip like glue.
"What do you mean?" I finally said after remembering how to breathe again.
"Your only other option is to move in with your aunt if you are to stay."
"Aunt Bethany? But she lives two hours away." I sound more rational than I should be, but somehow I managed to keep asking questions.
"Aunt Jane." My mind draws a blank. Not a single image of her came through my mind.
"Who?" I asked, confused.
