"You know we can still not do this. He didn't even raise me there is no reason for you to see my dad. You've already met him anyway."

Benito smiles and puts his hand on my thigh as we drive down the California road. "The last time I saw your dad we bailed Kiara outta jail. Ya know, that wasn't the most ideal situation to meet him."

I roll my eyes. "No situation is ideal."

"This is why we make a great team. You're grumpy and I'm joyful."

I laugh. We've some how been doing this relationship thing for a full year with no issues. Since the trials ended, we've both been busy with working and traveling back and forth to see each other. And suddenly Benito wanted to meet my dad one day me him and Kiara were hanging out. I think Kiara put the idea in his head that if we are serious, we have to meet each other's parents. I personally could not care less. I'm not a parent's person. Sometimes they're really cool and then you get attached which hurts when you eventually break up. Or the parents can be dicks and that drives a rift in the relationship. Either way, Benito and I have been doing so good lately I don't want parents to come into the picture and ruin everything.

Kiara text me non-stop until Benito is pulling into my dad and stepmom's driveway. She's the first to greet us at the door, hugging Benito first and then me.

"You know every time you chose him over me, I die a little inside." I fake pout. She rolls her eyes at me tucked securely in Benito's arms. He kisses the top of her head, and she reluctantly walks to me and gives me a half hug. I slap her arm and we all laugh.

"Hello! So nice to see you again Tianna!" Kiara's mom says. We don't really have a relationship but whenever I pick up Kiara, she's always nice to me so I don't have any issues with her.

"Nancy this is Benito, Benito this is Kiara's mom." Benito gives her a warm hug and kisses both her cheeks to which she looks surprised by but embraces it. She ushers him to the kitchen to show off what she's making.

Kiara and I hang back by the foyer. "So, how's dad?" I ask biting my lip.

Kiara sighs, "He's in a bit of a mood but mom yelled at him. She said if he ruins this dinner he's going to sleep on the couch." I laugh. Kiara definitely gets her feistiness from Nancy.

"I just wanna get this over with." I sigh.

The night carries on with Benito helping Nancy in the kitchen and by helping, I mean cleaning whatever dishes she dirties while Kiara tells us how her new position at Michelle's new media marketing company is going.

"The crazy part is I know all this private information about these celebrities, but I can't tell you. Even if you ask, I'm legally bound." She says smugly.

"I know info about celebs, and I can tell you, because I'm not legally bound and they love to spill their guts when their drunk." Benito laughs.

"Ooo what can you tell me about Rob Lowe?" Nancy asks.

Kiara groans, "Mom why on earth would Bad Bunny know Rob Lowe?"

Nancy shrugs, "Snoop Dog knows Martha Stewart!"

I laugh and shake my head as the two argue about which celebs Benito has encountered. I motioned for Benito to follow me out the kitchen backdoor.

"You seem to be having fun." He hugs me from behind and kisses my neck.

"It's not so bad right now because father dearest hasn't showed but it'll fade."

He kisses my neck again causing a familiar feeling to tingle through my body. I turn in his grasp and put my arms around his neck.

"Are you trying to get me horny Mr. Martinez-Ocasio?"

He smiles, "I mean I wouldn't mind a little head right now."

I hold back my laugh when I see my dad standing behind us and clears his throat. Benito stiffens and turns around clearing his throat as well.

"Hello, sir."

"Dinner is ready." My dad says without making eye contact with us. I try to hold back my laugh at Benito's mortified face.

-

The dinner is filled with intense silence between my dad and I and Kiara, Nancy and Benito chatting away. Mostly Nancy asking him questions about tour life and Kiara going on about her job.

"Kiara, you need to stop with this part time job and settle on a college. A gap year is not what we agreed on." My dad says. I see Kiara visibly slouch in her seat.

"Dad I'm not going to college I'm going to continue working for Michelle. The pay is great, and my friend Julia and I are planning on moving out. "

I wait for my dad's reaction but he's silent at Kiara's words.

"That's great Kia, I wish I could of afford to live on my own at your age." Benito smiles at her. She smiles back content with his approval, but I see my dad fuming.

"Moving out is a big step sweetie. I would like to see this place before you make any final decisions," Nancy says.

Dad is still silently brewing.

"Well Tia did show me a few places on Zillow they're so cute mom you'll love it. And they're not far from here so of course I'll be home for you to do my laundry." Her mom rolls her eyes.

"It all started with you." My dad says lowly, this being the first thing he's said to me the whole dinner.

"Pardon, dear?" Nancy asks.

My dad looks me dead in the eyes and I know he's about to argue with me. My jaw tenses and I feel Benito link our hands under the table.

"You come around and Kiara is veering from her path. Going to jail, forgoing school and her church responsibilities and now moving out? You want to take her away from us."

I laugh because everything he says is so absurd it's a wonder, he can say it with a straight face.

"You really believe little ole me influenced her? Kiara has a mind of her own everything she does is because she wants to even when I tell her not to. Why don't you just say what you really want. You've been glaring at me all night."

"Tia-" Nancy begins but her husband cuts her off.

"You were a mistake, and I told your mother to have an abortion, but that woman doesn't listen. Why would she? She was so doped up she forgot she was pregnant at one point and here you are, a druggie just like her trying to take Kiara away."

It's not like my mom was perfect and it's not like I didn't know that her and my dad basically hated each other, and I was an accident but to hear the words from his mouth. To think he really believes I don't love my sister, hurts more than anything he could say.

"Jordan stops!" Nancy yells. I get up with Benito in tow.

"You don't have to worry about me anymore. I'm never coming here again. I'll see you later Kia, the food was delicious Nancy." I storm out going straight for Benito's car.

I hop in and drive off.

-

It's about 40 minutes later when I drive back to Kiara's home. Her and Benito are sitting on the swing. When I pull up Benito hugs Kiara goodbye and jogs to the driver's side to get in. I move over the console to the passenger side.

"Wanna tell me how someone who can't drive drove?" he asks annoyance in his voice.

"I'm sorry. I just drove up the block, there's a dead end. I sat there and then it took me 20 minutes to figure out how to do a U-turn."

Benito sighs. He reaches over and grabs the back of my neck, pulling me forward so our foreheads touch.

"Please don't do that again." I feel the tears well up in my eyes and nod.
