Before Irene knew it, it was Friday, the day she got on her flight to Canada. She woke up at 5 AM to get ready, and didn’t bother telling her parents goodbye. Her parents didn’t care about her, so why should she say bye to them? She didn’t even shoot them a text like she usually does when she’s mad at them. She just completely ignored their existence. With the little bit of sympathy in her heart, Irene sent a lengthy paragraph to Bogum and Hyoyeon through their group chat. It was a cliche paragraph telling the two how much she loves them and will miss them, as well as thanking them for always being there.

After waiting for what felt like an eternity at the airport, Irene finally boarded the plane. Her parents couldn’t afford for her to fly first class like they usually do, so she had to sit surrounded by strangers. If it wasn’t obvious, Irene hates everyone. She hates her parents, she hates herself, and she especially hates strangers. The only people she really likes are Bogum and Hyoyeon, the only friends she’s been able to keep for longer than half a year. She usually doesn’t keep friends for long, considering she’s full of hatred and dislikes all of her peers without reasoning. The only way she’s maintained her friendship with Bogum and Hyoyeon is because they’re both as mean and cruel as her. They’ve been friends for a shockingly long time, 2 years to be specific. It sounds like an average friendship, but considering her longest friendship only lasted six months, it was definitely a record in her books.

Irene was beyond relieved when she was able to get off the plane. The uncomfortable seats made her neck ache and the babies crying around her gave her a headache, as well as woke her up everytime she tried to get a nap in. When she walked into the airport to get her bags, she saw a family holding up a white sign that read “WELCOME TO CANADA, IRENE!” in pink and purple glittery letters. Irene was furious and humiliated. Why did people in Canada insist on embarrassing people as soon as they enter the country? Irene grabbed her luggage and walked over to the family of three. There was a girl who looked around Irene’s age with short brown hair and the sweetest smile. Though the people in Canada are humiliating, they sure are pretty. To the left of the teenager was a taller woman with short black hair, next to an even taller bald man.

“Welcome to Canada, Irene!” the daughter said, hugging Irene. The foreigner was stunned and uncomfortable, her hands at her sides while the brunette hugged her tightly. After a few seconds, the brunette could feel the energy become tense and let go. “Yes, welcome to Canada Irene!” the mother greeted cheerfully, ignoring Irene’s death glare. The father saw Irene’s expression and didn’t bother speaking a word besides introducing himself.

“Nice to meet you, Irene. I’m Wendy’s dad, you can call me dad too.” he said before smiling sweetly. “What’s your name?” Irene asked. “Heesung.” he responded. “I will call you Heesung.” Irene said, coldly denying his offer. “Can we go home now? I’m tired.” Irene asked. “Yes, let’s go! Wendy can show you around the house while me and my husband prepare dinner for us.” the mother smiled, Wendy and her dad agreeing. Irene shrugged and agreed to the idea before following them to their rather large van.

Their car was a large black minivan, it looked brand new too. It was spotless and shiny, no scrapes or scratches to be found, and the color wasn’t fading either. Despite how old the model looked, it still had a pure black color. Wendy and her parents got in the vehicle first, the brunette patting the spot next to her. “You can sit next to me, Irene!” Wendy smiled. “Wow, really? Thanks!” Irene said sarcastically before crawling to the back of the van, sitting as far away from Wendy as she could.

The drive was long and awkward for the Son family, but Irene didn’t mind. She knew when the energy was awkward, and she loved it. Making people uncomfortable by doing nothing always fascinated her, which is why she was always as awkward as she could be. Irene having an intimidating aura with the power to make any situation awkward as ever is her talent. The family eventually arrived home, Wendy walking Irene inside of the house while her parents grabbed all of Irene’s luggage and carried it to her room for her.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t introduce myself! My name is Son Seungwan, but everyone calls me Wendy. Is Irene just your nickname?” she asked curiously as Irene followed her into the house. “That’s none of your business. Just call me Irene.” the noirette answered sassily and with an attitude. “Oh.. Okay. Your name is beautiful.” Wendy complimented, trying to make conversation. “Okay.” Irene gave another cold response.

Wendy was starting to feel awkward and embarrassed as she tried to collect her thoughts. She had so many thoughts running through her mind, ranging from questions like “Why is she being so cold?” to confusing thoughts like “I don’t like girls, so why is she so hot?” all while she was trying to think of more questions for small talk. “How old are you?” Wendy asked. “Why do you care?” Irene questioned. “Well if we’re around the same age range, that means we’ll be in the same grade and maybe even the same class!” Wendy said excitedly. Irene’s heart sank in her stomach. She completely forgot about school, which was odd considering it’s the whole reason she came to Canada in the first place.

“I’m seventeen. In Korea, I’m a senior in high school.” Irene explained. “You’re a senior in Canada too! Oh my god, we’re the same age! We’re in the same grade, I really hope we’ll be in the same classes!” Wendy said excitedly. “This is gonna be awesome, I can show you all around school, we can eat lunch together, we can-” Wendy was explaining before she was interrupted by Irene.”Let me get one thing straight before you say anymore nonsense.” Irene said, holding her pointer finger to Wendy’s lips in order to shut her up. “We are not friends, we are not family. No matter how hard you try to get close to me, you will remain a stranger. I want nothing to do with you or your family. I’m being forced to live here, but I won’t be forced to enjoy it.” Irene said coldly, breaking Wendy’s heart. “Oh..” she replied quietly. “And if you even THINK about talking to me at school, I will rip your head off. Got it?” Irene asked, the taller of the two nodding in fear.

“Glad I made myself clear. Now go to your room, I can figure out where everything is by myself.” Irene said before walking away from Wendy and up the stairs to her room.

“Jesus.. I hope she isn’t like this all semester.’ Wendy thought out loud, scratching the back of her neck.
