July 12th, 1955, Maysville Kentucky.
Its humid and sticky, Kitty thinks, as she walks up to the grand white porch joined to the weatherworn white house. knock, knock, knock! The dirty green door doesn't open and the young girl huffs as she walks off the porch with her little legs to the yard of the home.
"Cherry! Cherry! I'm outside, let me in!" The little girl outside shouts to a high up window on the attic of the house.
No answer was returned, earning Kitty to pick up a small stone to chuck at the window. The window opened, a freckled girl shot her red messy head out of the window to scowl down at the smiling girl in her yard.
"For Christ sake, its 9 AM. You know I was still sleeping."
"I was bored, now come on, unlock the door."
Cherry slammed her window and made her way to the front door to unlock. Kitty smiled with her slightly crooked teeth when the dark green door opened and immediately pushed through Cherry to get inside the old but wide musty house.
"Did the milkman come here today?" Kitty asked while looking through Cherry's refrigerator.
Cherry rubbed her eyes with a sigh, "yes, we got Cheerios too."
Kitty took a spoon and bowl out of the old cabinets and fixed herself breakfast. The two girls sat in pleasant silence, only the quiet sound of Kitty's munching and her spoon scraping against the glass bowl. Cherry watched her while resting her hand on her cheek, deep in thought.
"What are you looking at." Kitty suddenly said, catching Cherry off guard.
"Nothing pretty, you want coffee?"
"No thanks."
Cherry knew her answer would be "no" but still asked as she got up and started the pot. Rubbing her hazel eyes, she tried to get the thoughts out of her head. She knew what was going on at the Welshie's house, Kitty's parents house. But Cherry carried on to distract herself and poured herself a hot cup of coffee.
Kathrine Welshie, the youngest child out of the six kids Kitty's mother has had with many different men. Kitty never met her father, but as of now, Miss Welshie is seeing a "Worthless deadbeat", as Kitty calls him. She doesn't tell much about her family, all Cherry knows is that they can't afford to pay the bills or food. Cherry also knows, but won't let Kitty know, that she knows that this "Worthless deadbeat" is beating the life out of the rest of the family.
"You know where Angel is? Kitty asked, "I went by her house this morning, but her brother said shes out."
"She's volunteering at the nurses office with her mom."
"Is Mrs. Hardy a nurse?"
"Geez, you have known Angel before me and you don't know her moms a nurse?" Cherry laughed.
"I always assumed but than the years slipped and I was too scared to ask!" Kitty laughed.
Cherry rolled her eyes, "She should be back by noon."
