Whimper, whimper.
Pant, pant.
Sob, sob.
Eridan Ampora swore up and down he was hearing things. He ran a hand through his brown and blonde hair, looking around. The young hipster took a drink from his Starbucks and crossed one of his legs over the other, his ankle resting on his knee. Sitting at the park usually cleared the young man’s mind, but not today. He swore up and down he heard crying right now. Eridan brought a hand to his cheek. All dry. If he wasn’t crying, who was?
Looking around, the young photographer finally found the source of the sobbing he’d heard for the last thirty minutes. It was that one girl, Feferi Peixes. She was a painter, and if you asked her sweetly enough, she’d paint your portrait there on the spot in the park. She’d drawn Eridan on an occasion or two, with consent of course.
Eridan and Feferi had proved to be pretty good friends. Eridan would come to the park to take photos for his blog; Feferi would come to the park to paint. They were great friends, best friends even. Eridan totally didn’t have a developing crush or anything on her, either; who’d everyone hear that from?
Eridan stood, his Polaroid hanging from his neck as he approached the girl who was leaning against her easel, sobbing. She was a wreck. The girl who would brighten up Eridan’s day with a simple smile or poke him until he quit being a “grumpy-gills”, as she called him, was leaning against her easel, broken into small bits.
“Hey, Fef.” He managed to say, smiling awkwardly at her. “W-why are you cryin’? Ev-verythin’ okay?”
In a sobbing mess, Feferi threw herself at the other, hugging him tightly and sobbing. “O-Oh, E-E-Eridan, i-it was absolutely AWFUL.” She sobbed, her makeup running down his shirt and scarf. “I-I don’t even know what I did WRONG!”
Eridan looked down at the girl with concern, bending his knees a little bit to see eye to eye with her. The hipster arched a thin eyebrow at the girl, wiping away a tear. “Fef, w-what happened?” He asked. There were only two things that Eridan could think of that would make Feferi cry like this. Sappy romance movies involving Jennifer Hudson, or…
CAPTOR.
Just as Eridan was about to open his mouth and ask her if it was Sollux Captor, Feferi’s current (ex?) boyfriend, she managed to wail out, “Sollux broke up with me!!”
Almost instantly, in a rage, Eridan’s brows furrowed, pulling the young marine fanatic into a hug, rubbing circles into her back. “Don’t w-worry, Fef,” he joked, burrowing his face into her thick, soft, black hair. “You’re still the best gill in the w-whole sea in my book, no matter w-what that douche-bag Captor says, okay?”
“I-it wasn’t that…” Feferi sobbed, gripping his shirt, “i-it was the way he broke up with me…” This caused Eridan to become even more curious. How the HELL could someone break up with someone else to leave them in this state? Was it a spur of the moment, “Oh, by the way, we’re done” kind of thing? Did he dump her over a text or on the phone? Was he… was he cheating on her?!
“W-What happened, Fef? You can tell me.” Eridan murmured, planting a soft kiss on the top of the girl’s head.
“I-It was a text,” Feferi said, wiping her running makeup away with the sleeves of her jacket. “H-Here…” the girl took her phone out of her pocket, the pink case lighting up with her touch. She slid it into Eridan’s hand.
