May sat in silence, deep in thought.
Solidad knew what the pendant did, but refused to tell her until Drew woke up, saying that if her theory was right, then he wouldn't attack us. Not that he could, in the state or situation he was in.
The blanket in the cell stirred, and Drew slowly started sitting up.
"Where... Where am I?" He asked, looking around.
"I see you're up."
His head whipped around. "Who's there?" He wondered, although not in a threatening tone.
Solidad walked over to the cell. "You may or may not recognize me. You were only five after all."
Drew blinked. "Solidad?"
Solidad smiled and nodded. "You're safe here." She reached for the door knob to let her out before May shrieked in protest, "ARE YOU CRAZY!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?"
Solidad sighed. "He's in his right mind, he's not going to attack us," she assured. "Not all demons are evil," she added on seeing the girl's hesitance. "Actually, most aren't evil."
"Um, they kind of attack us and want to kill us?" Dawn said, totally on May's side. "How is that not evil?"
"They don't want to kill, Dawn," Solidad told her. "Want me to tell you what the pendant does?"
May nodded vigorously.
"It works differently for demons and humans. For demons, it hides their demon appearance into one of a human, and protects them from mind control," Solidad explained.
"Mind control!?" Misty interrupted. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. So you're telling me that demons don't really want to hurt us, they're just being controlled?"
"Pretty much, thanks for the summery, Misty," Solidad confirmed. "The only way to tell a brainwashed demon from a sane demon is their eyes - they turn golden when being controlled.
"Which would explain why Drew's eyes were gold instead of their usual green lie, when he always wore the pendant," May realized while Drew just huffed as everyone was speaking about him as if he weren't there. However, he knew better than to say anything. If he agreed with Solidad, who was speaking the truth, they might think that Solidad was trying to deceive them into falsely giving him their trust.
Solidad nodded. "And as I said, it has a different effect on humans. For humans, it protects them from demons."
May's eyes widened.
"They can't smell the wearer, and it's as if they have a small unbreakable force field around them that repels most demons," Solidad explained.
May was speechless. If what Solidad was saying was true, then Drew gave up his sanity to become a brainless mind controlled zombie to protect her.
"That doesn't explain why he's not going crazy right now," Dawn argued, gesturing to Drew, who was at that point wondering if he was ever going to be let out.
"Because my theory is correct," Solidad simply stated, arms crossed and eyes closed. "Drew never took the pendant off for seven years. That coupled with the fact that it's part of his heritage is protecting him from the mind control since he's near it. That's why I couldn't let you leave, May. If you two get too far apart, then Drew will go back to having no control over himself."
This time when Solidad opened the cell door, no one tried to stop her. "Drew, come over to the bench so I can dress your wounds," she ordered.
Drew winced as he stood up and slowly began to limp over to the bench.
Sighing, May walked past Solidad to her former best friend and put her arm around him to support him.
"I believe you," she told him regarding the new information, "But I'm still mad at you."
He smiled weakly. "I was about to warn you what was going to happen, then the force field broke and I ran out of time."
He sat in silence as Solidad put the medicine on the rest of his cuts, bruises, and burns that couldn't be healed by magic.
Solidad frowned as she inspected a gash on his left wing. "You won't be able to fly until this heals," she warned him. "And don't you dare fly anyway saying you'll be fine, if you can get off the ground at all."
"Solidad... What do you mean when you say that the pendant was part of his heritage?" May questioned, thinking about the peach-haired woman's words.
"Because it's been in my family for generations," Drew answered, tired of being ignored. "It's the only one of it's kind, created by the powers of an extremely strong High Priestess and demon maybe a few centuries ago."
He flinched as Solidad put some of the medicine on his shoulder and May felt a wave of guilt pass over her.
"Sorry..." She whispered.
Drew just ignored her, not exactly happy at how weak he was feeling.
"I said, sorry," argued a little louder, trying to get a response.
"Thanks for the mercy in the woods," Drew sourly shot back.
She closed her eyes. "I lost control," she said softly.
Drew only scowled while Misty and Dawn looked ready to attack him for it, although May dismissed them with a wave of her hand. "It was always like this - argue, pout, explode on him, laugh about it," she explained.
The two released their guard, but they weren't afraid to show their obvious distaste and distrust of the hurt demon.
