Faolan felt the spirits rushing through his marrow. No. They were his spirits, his gyres, his past selves. One was the ancient Fengo, whose name was used as a title for the head of the Ring of the Volcanoes, who led the wolves out of the Distant Blue nearly a thousand years before, and who was one of Faolan's gyres. The second was Eo, a male Grizzly bear who was one of Faolan's more recent gyres. The third gyre was Fionula, a female owl who was a gadfeather, roaming Ga'Hoole. She was also Faolan's most recent gyre. But now, he was wearing the pelt, having the fixed splayed paw, and having the strange spiral mark on his pad that belonged to his still alive soul, the one named Faolan. The one who was paw fast with Edme, as he was when he was named Fengo, and she was Stormfast.

With all of this rushing through his marrow, his gizzard, and his large Grizzly heart, he locked in on a lone bison.

He felt himself transform seemingly midstride, into a wise, fast old wolf. The name Fengo raced through his head.

He then took on another shape and flew into the air, feeling the wind through his long and beautiful feathers, as the name Fionula came to mind.

As he was coming upon the bison, he sloped downward, and right before landing, changed again. He felt the name Eo run through his large pounding heart.

He landed on his paws, shaking the earth, and stood upright on his powerful hind feet. He landed close to the bison, and swiped with his hindfeet, swiped with his marrow, swiped with his gizzard, and swiped with his heart, feeling century old feelings come back to him. He killed the creature with a single blow. Faolan then turned back to his present self. He leaned down, pressing his head to the ground on instinct, to preform lochinvyrr. He felt the light go out of the defeated animal's eyes, and he blinked. "What just happened?"
