Crystals fall from the sky, coating and hiding the surroundings with a white blanket of coldness. The oxygen breathed by those who walk the earth returns to the air in colours of white and grey. Decorating the breezes with pearl swirls. Sun shining so bright, yet not an announce of warmth, caresses the fingertips of those who refuse to cover them. Hot drinks are introduced more often throughout the day. Food stalls selling their homemade goods with a matching warmth in their smile.
Winter is a calming time of year. The snow covered the land, icicles forming on every surface. Footsteps are hidden within the white, children run after each other with balls of the same colour, and loving partners create art pieces that hold personal meanings.
Everything about the colder seasons screams calming environments with activities to spike serotonin.
The events of what seemed like a mere few hours ago were something they couldn't forget. Though they happened nearing the four-year mark. The explosion, the stench of flying flesh and nearby screams of those who heard the sound. It's carved into the minds of those who survived the fight. Those who witnessed the final battle between humans and demons.
Life returned to what it always should have been. Humans don't need to fret about the night, and young ones are no longer required to put their life at risk. The long battle between life and immortality ended, leaving no trace of misery in its history.
Though, life remains similar in the way it treats people. The sunshine gleams as rainbows decorate blues skies, but nothing is forever. Happiness is a temporary feeling. It accompanies you throughout the moments that shine the brightest, gifting you with a smile and a sweet laugh. It's short-term because not even the best things can last. Happy feelings can last a moment no longer than a few seconds, but those seconds feel heavenly.
Unlike happiness, grief is a feeling that feels forever. It's something that can form a permanent marking in your mind. Grief carves at you like scars on smooth skin. It eats at your persona, draining the living out without mercy.
Grief accompanies death. They're friends, often seen stealing things together as they travel in and out of mortal beings. Friendships bloom through shared interests, and both hold that same love for taking. They take lives, happiness and smiles. They steal the words of loving couples for themselves and hide them in rotting boxes on the line between life and death.
Death is inevitable.
It kicks down your doors without a warning sign. Surprises seem to be its favourite thing. Death took a lot of lives on the day of the final battle. Lives that shouldn't have been lost so early on.
A purple-eyed butterfly flew to her loving sister, a burning flame found an intense source when the oxygen could no longer help him, and a young girl so full of love her heart would ache at anything else was finally able to spread her wings. She took a serpent by her side, a dual-eyed boy whose personality didn't match the one he loved so much. A bolder, stern and fulfilled man joined those who he trained with a kind heart, and a child so young merged with the mist that returned him to the brother he missed. They were the strongest. So many looked up to them. Cheered them on and dreamed of becoming something so powerful. But death has no mercy, and even the strongest people fall.
Some survived the brutal victory. An ocean-eyed boy with a dream to live the life his best friend deserved, a flashy and handsome man who lives to protect the three wives he loves dearly, and a pale-skinned canvas whose body is chiselled with scars and rewards of survival with a wish to love.
Happiness returned at the demon's disappearance and the victory of the nine pillars that hold the world away from disaster. Despite the loss of a loving brother, the canvas continued his life. And the water still ran even if his companions were no longer racing his current. The sound of music and fireworks fills the air as a laugh beams happiness at his new self.
