"It's not much but it's home," Akali laughed weakly to herself as she plopped down on the worn out bed, the springs creaking underneath her weight and the roughness of the mattress unpleasant against her skin. Yet, a weight pushed her eyelids closed, as moving had taken quite a bit of the girl's energy, mental and physical alike. She wasn't particularly fond of her new place, despite how cheap it was - it was a worn down house in the outskirts of town. The paint was peeling off the walls and it reeked of mold. Many things inside the house were broken, and the girl made a mental note to call the technician, as the plumbing was faulty and the sink in the kitchen wouldn't stop dripping. She could even hear it upstairs - the silent sound of the droplets falling and splattering against the metal surface. Drip... drip... drip...

The girl began counting, and the noise slowly lulled her to sleep. It was eerily peaceful. The wind battered against the boards, once in a while something creaked, and the branches of the trees scraped against the windows. Slowly, the sound of the water dripping was joined by the steady pattering of rain, yet, despite how close she was, the unease in her heart wouldn't let her drift into unconsciousness.

"This place gives me the creeps," the girl thought to herself as she weakly opened her eyelids to stare at the dark corner of the room where her suitcase was stored, squinting as to make her eyes stop seeing forms in the shadows, "no wonder the reviews said it's haunted."

She laughed to herself before gulping, "not that it matters, though. This was my only option. If it's haunted, so be it-"

As if the universe could read her mind, a loud crash resounded throughout the entire house, and the girl practically jumped up from her resting position.

"H-hello?" she inquired carefully, "y'know, I don't take visitors this late at night! You better respond if you know what's good for you!"

Silence. She gulped as her hand graced the railing of the staircase and she lightly padded down the stairs,

"Rats..? Maybe? God, I hope it's the rats..."

Her movements felt mechanical, as she stepped down one creaky step at a time, cringing at the amount of noise she was making, despite it being drowned out by the rainfall outside, which had now grown louder.

"Maybe I should just go to sleep? Yeah. That sounds like a good idea-" her train of thought was cut off as she felt something cold graze the back of her neck and she froze. Equally wanting to turn around and not, in fear of what she'd come face to face with. Slowly, she turned to check, but there was nothing there, and she felt like a child for considering even for a moment that she was not alone.

"Maybe I forgot to close the window, or maybe the draught is really bad in this place, I mean, it is old," she silently spoke to herself, seeking comfort. Carefully, she proceeded towards the bathroom, where she opened the tap in order to wash her face. The cool water sent tiny shocks through her hands, as she proceeded to splash it in her eyes. She rubbed her face in her nightgown, and flinched when she saw the reflection in the mirror. She wasn't alone. Yet, as soon as she blinked, the figure was gone, and she felt a chill run down her spine.

"Okay, now I'm seeing things too? I'm either tired as hell or those people might've not been as crazy as I thought," she quietly panicked, before opening the door to her bedroom. She made sure to close it tightly, before climbing into bed. The patter of the rain wasn't comforting anymore, as it was pouring buckets, and the girl felt her shoulders shake ever so slightly. She curled up into herself underneath the blankets, and then she heard something she really didn't want to perceive.

Click... Creak... the door to her bedroom slowly opened, as she froze in fear, holding her breath, hoping no one would hear.

One second passed.
