High school, beautiful times. Learning new things, seeing people your age smile, spending time with friends, forming a relationship with someone.

Of course, there will always be drama, fights, tears... bullies... A squad that finds a weak and helpless kid they can pick on. These bullies are also the popular kids. Everybody loved them.
They were Peter, Luke, John... but in this story we will talk about Johnˈs girlfriend, Jessica. The two were leaders of this gang.

It was pretty much the classic stealing lunch money, insulting etc. Still, everybody adored them and didnˈt do anything to stop them. The couple constantly held hands, kissed and pretty much shoved the fact that they are in love in everyoneˈs face.

But hereˈs the thing: they werenˈt in love. At least Jess wasnˈt. The way she was being treated by her boyfriend and the school was horrible.

She hated being called lovey-dovey with him.
She hated the relationship. Still, every day started and ended with John.
She hated the good morning messages and signs of affection that were very fake.

Jessica could only rely on her older brother David. They lived in a chaotic family. They didˈt need an alarmclock swince they were woken up by their parents arguing. Jessica truly wasˈt safe at home or at school. David was still her moving force. She confided in him and he gave her advice, but she didnˈt listen to him.

„Stand up to him!"
„I canˈt!"

Today was bad, very bad... It was a school day and John was talking with Jessica. It was the day she promised to stand up to him.
A promise to David.
A promise to herself.

„Jess! Guess what we can do to those kids today!" He exclaimed.

„John... about that..."

„Sounds great, right babe? I love it too!"

„I want to talk first."

John stopped. „Oh... I see where this is going." He took her hand. „I told you what would happen if you blow our cover." He lifted Jessˈ head so they make eye contact. „You either stay by my side or suffer more than you are now."

Jess sighed as John let go of her. „Okay... what were you thinking?"

She wasnˈt paying attention to what he was saying, but she had to agree.

It turned out to be a prank on a girl named Lana. She suffered from from mental disorder and Jessica wasnˈt sure what it was. The pranking lasted all day.

They kept putting small cards wherever she sat down. Jess wasnˈt sure what was written on them, but Lanaˈs reactions told her it was bad. Jessica kept looking at the miserable girl.

The last time Lana was seen, she was running out of the school, her face wet from tears.

When Jessica came back home and was tearing up too. David came and asked how it went. She was scared but told him everything.

„You did what?!"

„Iˈm sorry! I panicked... he was-"

„I donˈt care! Why are you apologizing to me?!"

„I just-"

„Jess, you promised."

She was silent.

"Iˈm not talking to you untill you make this right by yourself! You never listen to me anyway!" David walked out of the room.

Jess felt even worse now. She decided that tomorrow, she would apologize to Lana.

The next day, she came to school scanning the place hoping to see Lana, untill she heard someone say:
„Hey, did you hear about the girl that ran out of the school crying yesterday? I heard she killed herself!"

„What!? Who told you that!?" Jess said, shocked.

„A friend of hers. But how come you care? You caused this."

She kept falling deeper in the pit of shame. „No! How could I do this?!"

Now youˈd think things have changed, but no. Jessica never talked to her brother again and was still under Johnˈs finger. Stuck with survivorˈs guilt.

One day, Jess came to Lanaˈs grave at the local cemetery.

„Iˈm so sorry..." she kept repeating while weeping.

For the first time, she really was sorry...

But there's no way back...
