A flickering candle. A thundering train. Shadows on walls that look like ghostly figures if you stare too long. An eerie silence that creeps inside you and nestles under your skin.

I love the nighttime. The darkness between street lamps and the cover of rainy days. To hide me from the Chainers and help me blend in to the scenery.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" An old friend with a face I can't remember had asked me one drearily sunny day.

"I don't want to be anything." And it was true. I found no pleasure diving into work the way everyone else did. I had no dream job because my dream wasn't to work.

Classes and years wasted staring at my phone, wanting to be anywhere but school. Sometimes I even wished the world would end, because maybe then I'd magically be qualified to exist.

And though I was usually wrong (about everything, according to anyone who'd ever spoken to me) time was starting to show that I WAS right! Surviving the end of the world WAS something I was good at! (<-- that is a lie.)

When people started getting sick, I found a weird sense of relief in it. Because I knew classes would stop, and I could rest. It would be like covid, I knew, only temporary but the exact kind of relief I needed.

But it wasn't temporary. It came from the food, mostly. Bimexon was a type of preservative found in everything. Fast food to healthy food, almost anything you ate would have it.

No one reads food labels (except annoying health teachers) so no one noticed. Bisphenol, Olestra, Saccharin, just a few examples of harmful ingredients that people used to overlook.

It was a way to cut down on the overpopulation. Which was even funnier, since they were banning abortions at the same time. Some foods were recalled when people got sick, but it wasn't blamed on Bimexon directly.

"We're still investigating the cause!" They'd say, again and again.

And then people started dying. Lots of people. The goverment decided to remove the chemical from the foods, but it was too late. The wrong people began using it as a weapon. Evolving it. Terrorists.

They started putting it in drinks, illegally, paying off thousands of people to spike them at the factories. Most people didn't even need to be paid; they loved playing god. And so, even more people died.

The economy began to collaspe, making money worthless. And lack of jobs due to the declining population meant a lack of resources. No food. Spacy internet and rolling blackouts.

It was all going to hell and people barely noticed. How can you ignore the world burning around you with a smile?
