Volunteering and Nandos

“Come back here silly!” I shouted grabbing Lucy around the waist and tickling her.

“Stop it!” She said between giggles collapsing on the ground in a laughing fit.

“I will when you stop cheating at Duck, Duck, Goose!”

She wrestled out of my grip before running off laughing.

“Come back here Goose!” I shouted as followed the sounds of giggles.  I volunteered here at the London’s Children Center, where under-privileged kids could go on the weekends while their parents were at work.

“I’m coming to get you Goose!” I heard giggles from around the corner and I jumped out around the corner, expecting to see the little blue-eyed girl. Instead I smacked face-first into a broad, muscular chest. I fell back onto my bum. I looked up and saw a tall, blond and brown haired guy laughing down at me. I felt my cheeks flush as I met his sparkling blue eyes. He reached down to help me up. When he grabbed my hand I felt shivers radiate from our touching skin and I was aware of every point of me he was touching. I jumped up and dropped his hand like a hot coal. He looked disappointed, though I couldn’t guess why.

“Hi, My names Niall. And you are?” He had a cute accent, different but not something I could place.

“I’m Katie. I haven’t seen you around here before, are you a new volunteer?”

“Well, sorta.” Came the reply, “My mates and I actually just donated some money and I figured I would stay around after to help volunteer.”

“That’s great! We can always use more volunteers. Do you want me to show you around or do you already know..”

“No, I would love if you could…show me around.” He said, cutting his eyes up to me mine. I felt a thrill run through me. There was something about him that made me feel, I don’t know, different somehow. Meeting his eyes I felt a rush.

“Right this way then, Monsieur.” I said with a posh accent, a smile on my face.

“After you Mi’lady.” He replied, bowing. I took a second to take him all in, he was familiar somehow, but I couldn’t place him. He was rather attractive though. I mean of course I noticed it when I first saw him, how could I not have noticed him? I bumped right into him! He was just about a head taller than me, with blond and brown hair swept across his face. He looked up and caught me studying him.

“Like what you see?” He asked with a cheeky smile.

“I don’t know, do I?” I said smirking, keeping eye contact with him. He took a step closer to me, never breaking eye contact. I felt my heart pound in my chest, so loud it echoed in my ears. I stepped even closer to him and he brushed back a piece of brown, curly hair that had fallen in front of my eye. Everywhere he had touched on my face tingled and sent shivers down my spine. Neither of us blinked and I swear I forgot to breath for a minute. He leaned down, his sparkling blue eyes keeping contact with my light green ones and when his face was a hairs-width away from mine he stopped and hesitated for a moment. We heard giggling.

Looking down I saw a little blond head squeeze in between Niall and I.

“Katie and Niall sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. First comes love then comes marriage then comes-“ I cut her off.

“I found you Lucy! I win!” I leant down and picked her up, propping the 4-year old onto my hip. I looked up at Niall for a moment and our eyes met, before I broke the contact, brushing off what had happened.

“Here let me show you around.” I said shakily, taking in a deep breath.

It had been almost 4 hours since I had first met Niall but the time had flown by. He was so good with the kids and they all loved having a new face to play with. It was about ten to 6 and I was ready to head home to my apartment where I lived with my roommate Lexie, who was currently away visiting her family. Lexie and I had been friends in the states and when we both decided to come to London for university being roommates seemed obvious.

I would probably just heat up some leftovers before watching old reruns on the telly. I started to pack up my things in my purse, saying goodbye to the other volunteers like me who came once or twice a week to help out. I grabbed my coat and when I turned around Niall was standing behind me.

“Did you plan on leaving without saying goodbye?” He said cheekily. A smile rose on my lips as I replied.

“Why of course not! I wouldn’t dare.”

Suddenly he looked a little nervous and he started fiddling with his hands, twisting them back and forth.

“Would you like to catch a bite?” The words tumbled out of his mouth in a stream so fast I almost didn’t catch them.

“You mean, go out to eat or something?” I clarified.

“Yeah. Not anything fancy. I was just feeling a little peckish.” He rushed to explain.

“Yeah I would love to. Shall we be going then?” I said with a smile.

“Just let me grab my coat.” I turned to talk to one of the other volunteers while I waited, stealing a passing glance at Niall. He obviously didn’t realize that I was watching him as he made a little victory jump, clapping his feet together in the air as he walked away, making me laugh.

We were at Nandos each with a huge set of chicken in front of us, laughing at a bad joke I had just made, one of many I had stored away. He had just finished his plate of chicken and I had two pieces left of mine.

“I just want one piece, you have two-we can each have one.”

“You already finished your entire plate.” I said with a laugh as he reached over to nab a piece of my chicken. I batted his hand away, stuffing the two pieces left into my face.

“Aw-you took ‘em both.” He said, disappointed.

“Well of course I did- they’re mine.” I tried to say around the hunks of chicken in my mouth. I think it came out more as “ell-ourse-id-eyre-ine” but he got the message all the same. He laughed as I swallowed the chicken and wiped the few crumbs off of my lips. We grabbed out things and went outside the restaurant, we had taken his car their, as I had taken the tube to the Children’s Center. We talked in the car and I realized how easy it was to talk to him. How he could make me laugh one minute and tell him my secrets the next- and I had only known him for less than a day. He walked me up to the apartment building and started to wait for the elevator with me.

“You know, I can operate an elevator by myself.”

“I have no doubt, but I would hate to hear you’d been kidnapped.” We rode the elevator up to my apartment and stood outside my door.

“Hey, I’ve had a great time with you today.”

“Me to, I don’t really want to have it end.” He said softly.

“Well, it doesn’t have to.” I said meeting his eyes.

He leaned down, gently folding his arms around my waist, pulling my closer to him. I looked up at his eyes, standing mesmerized as I watched his face come closer to mine and I felt his warm breath brush my face. Everywhere our bodies touched felt electric and I brought my lips up the last couple centimetres separating us. Our lips met and it was perfect, tingly and sweet- I kissed him as if he were the only thing I needed to keep living.

He broke the kiss softly, brushing the tip of my nose with his lips before pulling back farther.

“Well that was something.” He said with a cheeky smile.

“I don’t know, felt pretty routine to me.” I said jokingly, before biting my lip and turning a little more serious.

“You know I don’t usually offer on the first date, or to practical strangers-“ He scoffed, but I continued on, ignoring him. “But would you like to come in?”

I held my breath waiting for his response.

“I would love to.” He said softly, meeting my eyes.

“Well then what are we waiting for?” I said boldly, unlocking the door behind my back. Grabbing one of his hands and pulling him in after me, I closed the door with a laugh before his lips captured mine once again.
