I took several raspy breaths before my breathing evened out. I looked to my right, where my lovely wife Annabeth sat in her wheelchair. A tear fell from her deep, grey eyes. Our kids, Jason and Zoë, stood by her side, with tears streaming down their faces. Zoë's daughter, River, stood by her side. Jason's son, James, stood next to Annabeth, wiping her wispy white hair out of her face.
"Annabeth," I wheezed, "good bye, Wise Girl."
She seemed to understand it was time. She beckoned James to help her from her wheelchair, so she could come to my side. James took her hand, and held on to her back to help her balance. She stepped up beside my bed, and reached her hand where the bracelet I gave her for our 50th wedding anniversary dangled loosely on her wrist. She leaned over my forehead, and pressed her lips gently against my temple. I reached my hand towards her cheek, which was going pale with old age. "I love you."
"Goodbye, Seaweed Brain." She whispered.
I looked at my children and grandchildren one last time, and smiled as the world went blank.
