''Next!''

He could've never foreseen this. He never meant to get caught up in such acts, and, well..now look where it's led him. To the chopping block. They were going to execute him.

The crowd cheered loudly, practically shattering his skull with every chant. His head pounded, migraine growing with anxiety. he didn't mean to do it. how was he supposed to know it was her who set this up?

He would've ran, but, there they stood, keeping his arms restrained on either side. He was done begging for forgiveness. He'd seen it all at this point; Death, Rebirth, ''The truth..''

They threw him to the ground infront of the executioner. ''Kneel.'' His mind was numb, empty, almost. Though, he was strangely at peace. Was it what they injected into him earlier?

She stood, next to the executioner as he forced himself up to kneel. She mouthed out an apology to him before begining her speech. ''We stand here today-'' and he couldn't hear a word of it.

There was a loud ringing in his ears, not a great sign for the angel infront of him. Atleast, thats how he'd describe her. She, to him, was from the heavens herself. She had the looks of a goddess, like the ones he'd seen only in paintings before.

''It's a shame what they'll turn her into.'' a voice whispered into his ear-not from any physical form nearby.

Seeing her almost made the 'medicine' wear off.

''Excuse me-'' When had the ringing stopped? ''Miss Delta, forgive my interruption, but the priestess would like a word with you.''

''Has something happened to her?'' She asked, feigning curiousity. The three of them knew this would happen, it was obvious who sabotaged the Priestess' drink the night prior.

•✟•

''Cryx, what are you doing?'' He could sense her concern dripping from her aura. He knew she knew what he was doing. He knew that they were unprepared. He knew that she was scared. but tonight was the perfect night to do this.

Perhaps the only time to do this.. He couldn't risk this opportunity.

''You wish to leave, no?'' He swallowed hard, heart hammering in his chest as he poured the poison into the chalice.

•✟•

''Yes, I'm afraid she's rather ill. She asks that we postpone the execution.''

''Ofcourse. tell her I'll be there shortly.''

And so, she announced the sudden delay, and the 'guards' tied the man up, back onto the chair like before.

''My lady,'' she took a cautious step forward, ''you sent for me..?'' the priestess coughed, loud and vulgar ''Y..yes..I did.'' she forced out, voice weak and unprepared.

Delta's stomach dropped—in a metaphorical way, ofcourse—filling itself with guilt, pure, raw guilt. She knew this had to happen. She knew they were without choice. She knew that that night wasn't her fault. Or..maybe she thought it wasn't.

•✟•

''Cryx,'' she tried to reason with him, ''please, we have no choice, we have to get f-'' her words were interrupted by a loud shout, ''NO!''

''Cryx-'' but he wasn't having it. ''There has to be another way! I'm not pois-'' a hand came across his mouth, Delta holding him close as a guard passed by the hallway, the two going unnoticed. Once the coast was clear, she spoke again.

''Cryx..'' she removed her hand, stepping away to give the man space to breathe, ''you want to get away, you want to help, don't you?'' he nodded, with tears in his eyes, he nodded. ''Then please,'' she placed the small jar in his hand, closing it with her own. ''Don't do it for me. Do it for her.''

''..Okay'' he croaked out, ''I'll do it.'' she breathed a sigh of relief, nodding before hugging him, ''thank you'' she whispered, pulling away.

•✟•

'Maybe..there was another way' she thought to herself, 'Maybe we didn't have to do that. Maybe there was a wa-' her thoughts were interrupted by the calling of her name.

''Delta..'' with eyes, conflicted with emotion, she snapped back into reality. ''Yes, my lady?'' the priestess shook her head, ''please, call me..mother.''

She swallowed. Hard. 'Mother..' she repeated in her mind with pure venom. She didn't deserve to be called that anymore. But, if she wanted to get the plan over with..

''Mother.'' she corrected herself. ''Yes, my dear.. that's.. that's better. Listen, Delta, Sweetie..'' her words fell silent, and Delta approached the bed, getting a better view of the ill woman infront of her. ''Yes, Mother?''

But there was no response.
Nothing.
Not. a. single. word.

''Mother?'' Delta tried once more, taking another step forward before rushing to the bedside, a familiar feeling creeping down her spine. ''HELP'' she screamed, ''SOMEONE, ANYONE,'' why did she have to do this? ''GET A DOCTOR- SHE'S - SHE'S..''

Tears fell from her eyes as she took her mother's cold hand in her own. ''Why..why did I..'' she shook her head, tightening her grip before loosening it, hoping her mother would do the same back, like she used to.

''It had to be done.'' with an intake of air, an exhale of understanding, she prepared herself for the act of a lifetime. ''SOMEONE, HELP!!'' she shouted, releasing her grip and rushing out of the room ''SOMEBODY, PLEASE''

'come on, Delta..come on..dig into the feeling'

''M-Miss Delta? Miss Delta! What's wrong? What happened?'' she turned her head, flinching back ''Oh..oh..its just you.'' she wiped her tears as more fell, ''It-..It's my mother. Please, you have to help-'' she fell to her knees, taking the guards hand in her own. ''please..'' she whispered out.

''O-Okay..I-please stand up, Miss Delta.'' he helped her over to the bench in the hall way. ''I'll get Valentine, she'll know what to do. Please, stay here.'' he rushed out.

And she smiled.
Her mother was dead.
They were one. step. closer.
