It was the next day. Lila and I had just gotten ready. We were heading out of the apartment and I turned to see a worried expression on Lila's face.
" I know that face, spill it out," I said.
" What, I'm not making any face!" She said unconvincingly.
"You're going to tell me anyway, might as well tell me now".
" Fine" She sighed, " Nobody knows what happened to me, how will they react, will they make fun of me or have pity on me and treat me as if I'm not capable of doing things on my own?".
" Well, I'm not exactly the right person to be advising on this, but what I can tell you is, people are going to react that's true. Some might choose to be mature and respect you and some might be childish about the whole thing. What matters is how you choose to react to all of this. You could see this as something that may be holding you back from being happy or you could see it as an open door to more experiences and opportunities" I suggested
She suddenly got into deep thought and there was a silence in the air. It wasn't a bad kind of silence, more like we were both processing what I had just said. Wow, you know, I'm pretty good at giving advice when I think about it.
Soon the bus came and Lila grabbed my hand, I squeezed it to reassure her, that things would be okay.
I helped her climb the bus, which was not as easy as you think it was.
As we entered, I sensed a bit of tension. Why were people acting so awkward, I mean if you are that curious to know what happened, then ask. Human beings are so complicated.
I zapped out of my thoughts when a kid sitting at the back of the bus asked, "Hey, you, why are you sitting in a wheelchair?"
His friend elbowed him and told him to shut up. I suddenly felt a rage build up in my chest, but wait, wasn't I just fine with someone asking a minute ago, gosh! Human beings are so complicated!
I was about to say something, but Lila stopped me before I could. I kept quiet, I didn't want to embarrass her and have her known as the kid who needs her older sister to be there for her 24/7.
We finally arrived at school after our very uncomfortable ride. I wanted to take Lila to her class, but she insisted I didn't.
Her life had hit a turning point, but maybe this was just a blessing in disguise.

School was over and usually after school, I would head to work and Lila would go to the school fields for soccer practice. I knew it was the last place she probably wanted to be, but I went there anyway and just as I guessed it, she was there.
" Hey, what are you doing here?" I asked.
" Oh, you know, just watching my friends having the time of their lives, while I sit on the sidelines"
" Well, I'm going to work, I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?".
" Well, I have nothing else to do so let's go" Lila shrugged.
I was actually surprised she wanted to come with me, usually, Lila is a very pessimistic person. So we headed to the cafe I work at.
Once we got there my friends all stood in shock, staring at Lila. They have known Lila since she was eight. They all came rushing towards her and crowding around her, asking her things like: "Are you okay?", "How long will you be in this wheelchair?", "does it hurt?", "Do you need to lie down or need water?"
I could tell she was getting irritated and flustered so I pulled her away and brought her to a table.
" Okay, I'll be heading to work now, you can just do your homework or whatever"
She didn't respond, all she did was look out the window next to her checking out the view.
I headed off to work and had to endure the load of questions I was getting from my friends. Why couldn't they just focus on their work and mind their own business?

It was finally the end of my shift and I was heading home with Lila.
My mom started calling me and when I picked it up, she started freaking out. I told her to calm down and relax.
" Have you seen Lila?, she hasn't arrived home yet and I'm getting worried!" She cried.
" Mom she's with me, remember her current situation!"
" You know I can get home on my own right? , I just came with you, because I knew you wouldn't stop bothering me like everyone else" Lila exclaimed.
" Mom stop worrying, we'll be home soon okay," I said reassuringly.
We made it home and we all had dinner together, including Lila this time.
That night I was thinking of asking my boss for a raise so we could find a way for Lila's healing process to quicken.
" Nora"
I heard a small voice from next to me, it was Lila.
" I know that sometimes I can seem a little negative and that I don't appreciate you as much as I should, but I just wanted to say thanks for trying to cheer me up"
" Lila, I will always be here whether you want me to or not, You can count on your big sis to help ya"
" Do think if I pray hard enough, God will heal my legs?"
" I think you should just trust the process, he knows what he's doing"
" Hey, do you think that there is still some ice cream in the fridge?" Lila asked
" Let's go and check!"
