Adonis's Perfect Day

"I don't know why she would say that! This right after my mom was sent to the hospital and the only money I've had to my own name was stolen... Nothing can go right for me," Adonis sobbed into his hands.

The gullible sap that he was leading on that week become flustered. "I'm sure she just misunderstood you!"

"B-but, if you feel like I'm taking advantage of your money, it's okay... I can find some way to get $100 myself... For my mother's medical bills." Adonis crossed his arms over his chest, putting a lot of hesitancy into his voice. He didn't stop the tears from falling down his face.

He got what he wanted. The sap handed over the cash-- really an insignificant sum for their rich family-- and he allowed them to hug him briefly. He thanked them profusely. He was careful to seem grateful while not mentioning any need to repay them. If he didn't mention it, they wouldn't think of it. They said their goodbyes. Adonis stepped into the rainbow union, counting his new bills. He sat across from Margaret.

She glanced at his wet cheeks and smirked. "Your act went well, huh?"

Adonis tried to wipe his tears with his sleeve, but all the rough denim did was make his cheeks red. "Hook, line, and sinker. Fed them the old sick mom with hospital bills routine."

"You don't have a mom."

"They don't know that. Besides, the situation was precarious. I had to deflect. Ebony talked to them, honestly don't get why she can't let me hunt in peace."

Margaret flicked his forehead. "Some people don't approve of manipulation, perhaps?"

Adonis rolled his eyes, covering his forehead with one of his hands. "She got her money by having rich parents. As far as I'm concerned, she's as much of a parasite as I am."

"She still paying you to leave her alone?"

"Easiest money of my life," he grinned. "Say, since it's payday, why don't we go shopping? Bring Piper along? We can go to Spirit Halloween!" He said the last sentence in the sickly sweet way that one speaks to a dog they are about to throw a ball for. Margaret put her hand up as if she would flick him again, and he flinched, but she didn't do it.

"Sure. I'll drive."

When Adonis entered his dorm, Piper eyed his wet cheeks and asked the same question Margaret did.

"Maybe I was crying because I was genuinely sad, did you ever think of that?"

Piper raised a single eyebrow at him, unimpressed.

"... Okay, yes, I was acting. Got $100 out of it. Margaret's taking me shopping, wanna come along?"

"And benefit from your poor victim's sympathy?"

"Who said I would buy you anything?" He stuck his tongue out at her. She rolled her eyes.

"Then I guess it's fine for me to come along."

Adonis quickly changed his jacket, washed his face, and put on some makeup. Piper and Margaret were both waiting for him by the time he was ready.

"Finally!"

"You can't rush perfection."

"So we should be fine rushing you."

Once they were all piled into the car, Adonis made Margaret drive to the bank first, where he put the money into his bank account and wired most of it to his dad. He got back into the car quietly, only briefly explaining "rent."

The girls nodded. Piper said "so I suppose you expect us to pay your way again?"

"Only if you want me to be happy."

Piper and Margaret looked at each other, and in unison, replied "we don't." They drove to the Spirit Halloween.

Piper pointed out a ghost costume. "This is obviously inaccurate! Everyone knows that ghosts are blue or transparent, not pink."

"A pink ghost? Oh, real terrifying!" Margaret laughed. Adonis got a shiver up his spine, seemingly for no reason.

Then they took a look at the women's costumes. That was a riot. They were gasping laughing after seeing a "sexy goldfish" costume (a tiny orange dress covered in sequins, with a hat that looked like a fish tail). Margaret jokingly said she would buy it, and Adonis sobered up enough to tell her that orange was SO not her color.

They tried on a few costumes and perused the decorations. Piper got a hot pink "spider skeleton" figure. She claimed it was only because it was so ridiculous as spiders didn't have an inner skeleton, but it was obvious she just thought it looked cool. Adonis spotted a biker gang costume and turned pleading eyes to the girls. They were completely immune. So he just had them take a picture of him trying it on. He sent the picture to a guy he was talking to over text. The girls looked over his shoulder a judged the guy's reply; Margaret said he seemed like a simp, and Piper thought he was very nice. Adonis said it didn't matter either way. He was loaded.

Piper found some spooky stickers. She waved Adonis over. "Look, stickers!"

"Stickers," he agreed.

"Maybe I'll get them, and every time you DON'T ruin someone's life or swindle them out of their money, you can have one!"

Adonis frowned and put his hands on his hips. "Seriously, I'm not five..."

"So you don't want them?"

"No, shut up, if that's all I'm getting then I'm gonna get them." He grabbed the stickers and held them defensively. Piper laughed.

Time seemed to fly by as the high schoolers explored the store. By the time they checked out, there was no chance for them to go anywhere else. They piled back into Margaret's car, exhausted but exhilarated, and made their way back to Rainbow High. Adonis and Piper said goodnight to Margaret and went to their dorm.

"Ugh," Adonis said, "I totally forgot to do my laundry. Pip, can I borrow a shirt?"

"No way," Piper sneered, but she threw an oversized band shirt at his head anyway.

"Thank youuuu," he said, drawing out the phrase musically.

"Then can I have some of your microwave popcorn?"

"Yeah, whatever." While Adonis changed, Piper popped the popcorn and got Nita to come out to the couch. The roommates settled down.

"What are we watching?" Nita asked.

"Horror movie, just bought it." Piper pulled out a DVD. The cover was so badly edited that the movie couldn't have had a decent budget. It was bound to be a hilarious watch, even if it wasn't scary. She started the movie. She and Nita cuddled up together while Adonis sat to the side. The fact that they respected his space made him feel just as warm and comforted as cuddling must have felt for them. Adonis smiled softly. It had been a perfect day.
