Chapter OneRebecca Albright could sum up her marriage to ex-husband, Kelly Glass, with two sentiments: great sex and hellacious arguments. Now, holding fast to his bony arm as they walked in lock-step toward the security checkpoint in Sydney Airport, she could make one unexpected addition to their current relationship: unwavering loyalty. She said not a word, afraid of releasing a floodgate of emotions.
They had ushered in their final morning together, sharing a quiet meal prepared by his hands. She'd watched him closely, observing the rigidity with which he shuffled around the kitchen of his luxury high rise apartment. His body was no longer that of the once robust sailor who stole her heart many years before. That dark-haired young man with rugged looks and a flair for the unexpected was now grey and thin. A sad shadow of his former self.
The feelings they'd expressed to one another the night before had not been discussed, though their tender moments beneath the starry Australian sky sat like an anvil on her mind. In the handful of days they had spent together, she'd shared more of herself with him than she had during their entire marriage. She couldn't deny it—her ex-husband had changed, and as a result of their time together, she had as well.
She stopped walking and turned to face him. Her hands were shaking. He reached and took them in his, rubbing his sunbaked thumbs over her pale, silky skin. The pain in his eyes was obvious, yet he managed to muster a sweet smile.
"You don't have to say anything. Just let me look at you." He squeezed her hands. "My god, Rebecca, you are so beautiful. Even more beautiful than the day we met."
"Please come back to the U.S. with me. There are doctors who could--" Rebecca pleaded.
"Shhh..." he whispered, then leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers in a soft kiss. When he pulled away, he smiled once more.
"You have to promise me you'll take care of yourself," she said.
"I never have. Why start now?" he teased. "You better go or you'll miss your flight."
"You're a good man, Kelly Glass." She gazed into his deep brown eyes, fighting back tears.
"Only because you've made me want to be," he said.
A throng of travelers swirled around them. An enormous lump formed in her throat at the thought that she'd probably never see him again. Her arms around his waist, she pulled him close and held him one last time.
"I love you, Becks. I never stopped and I never will," he whispered, resting his chin on her head.
"I love you too," she said, unable to hide her tears.

"We'll be landing soon. May I take that?" the flight attendant asked with a smile.
