CHAPTER FOUR
WESLEY
-Several months passed and things only progressively got worse.
The noises started one night, a few months after the awkward dinner I had with Macy and Tyler. A loud crash, followed by muffled screams. Then the yelling pursued, but would quickly die down. There'd continue to be loud thumps and bangs for close to an hour. Some evenings it would be on and off for several hours, late into the night.
The first time I'd heard the sound of crashing and screaming, I rushed over to check on Macy, worried that something terrible had happened, though at the time I didn't imagine it'd have anything to do with Tyler.
I rushed over to their front porch, my fists desperately colliding with the door until one of them would come to my beckoning.
It was Macy who answered. She didn't fully open the door, rather propped it open just enough for me to see her peering through. Her face was red, her cheeks wet with tears, though she tried to conceal the emotion.
"Hey. I heard loud noises and wanted to check on you. Are you okay?" My voice cracked with worry.
She abruptly nodded her head, her lips pursed as it appeared she was fighting back tears, "Yes, everything's fine."
Her voice was much more quiet than usual, as she continued to attempt to mask any emotion. That was when Tyler came to mind, and I started to worry that he'd done something to her, something she'd feel inclined to hide to protect his reputation.
"Is Tyler home?" I asked her, trying not to make my concerns too obvious.
She only nodded in response that time, her eyes briefly falling to the floor, struggling to hold eye contact with me. I knew something was really wrong when she couldn't continue to look me in the eyes.
"Macy," My voice seemed to startle her. Her eyes darted back up at me.
"Wesley, I—" she started, before I cut her off.
"Tell me Tyler didn't hurt you."
She seemed to run through a variety of emotions then, trying to differentiate which one to feel. Her eyebrows furrowed, then her lips formed a slight frown, until she settled into a soft smile, all in the matter of seconds.
"I don't know why you'd assume such a thing, Wes." She finally responded, causing my heart to fall to the pit of my stomach.
"I'm trying to make sure you're alright, Macy. The sounds I heard just now were very concerning, and you don't look okay to me." My voice was in a hush, as I was beginning to get a little choked up.
"I'm just fine. Tyler's nothing but an amazing fiancé."
"Fiancé?" I repeated back to her, my heart now torn into a million shreds.
"Yes, Tyler and I will be getting married."
I could hardly believe the words that were coming out of Macy's mouth. Not only did Tyler propose to her, but she said yes. She was going to be legally bound to that asshole, who I at that point was certain was laying his hands on her.
"Macy—" I was interrupted by the sound of Tyler's voice in the background, seeming to startle Macy as her focus snapped towards the direction of his voice.
"Who is at the door, babe? You didn't call anyone did you?" He questioned the frail woman who stood before me, his words noticeably slurred.
I peered through the small opening in the doorway, catching glimpse of Tyler stumbling into the front room, which happened to be the kitchen. He had a beer bottle in hand, which he then took a hefty swig of.
