Bright and early, like everyday. I hate school, I only have one friend and kids are just mean. Mum wakes me up at 7:30 normally, or we’re late, but today she didn’t, must of slept in. I decide to take this opportunity to catch up on some sleep that I’d missed out on. I stay laying there for what feels like forever. I look at the clock, 1, 2, 5, 8, 10 minutes slowly go by and I just can’t get to sleep, it’s just painful, i’m exhausted, yet I can’t manage to get some rest.
After what feels like, at least an hour I decide to get out of bed. The house feels lonely without mum rushing around to get everything done before work. Wait, doesn’t mum have work today? Maybe she’s taking a day off. Should I go get ready? Am I even going to school today? Whatever I’m just gonna make some breakfast.
“June!”
“Good morning mum.”
“You just let me sleep in!?”
“You know Mel’s still asleep right?”
“Go get ready your gonna be late, I’ll wake up your sister.” mum sighs.
“Ok.”
Mum then left to go wake Melody, I finished my breakfast, packed my bag, got dressed then went to brush my teeth. After brushing my teeth and hair I decided to go sit down in the lounge.
“Morning Mel.”
“Morning.”
Mel hates school just as much as I do, but for completely different reasons. Melody has tons of friends, her teachers love her and she never gets in trouble, plus she doesn’t get bullied, she’s just lazy. Mum comes in.
“Ok get your bags”
We grab our bags and get in the car. Mum seems a little frustrated, not surprised. I usually read during the trip but today I decide to just stare out the window and watch it all go by. After a long car ride we get to school. I give mum a hug and get out, I always have to wait for Melody to get out, she takes forever.
“Make sure to grab a late slip.”
“Yep.”
After Melody finally gets out, mum blows us a kiss and drives off. We walk to the office, pick up a slip, I drop Mel off at class and then walk to mine. I don’t quite understand why we still go to this school when we live so far away, just because Melody wanted to stay, doesn’t mean mum had to listen. I get to class, hang up my bag and walk in, everyone is staring at me, as usual. I go and sit down at my desk.
“Good morning.”
“Morning Mike.”
Mike's been my friend for as long as I can remember. Our parents are friends and he lives right down the road from us, so we grew up together. He’s one of four, he has his older sister Taylor, his little brother Owen and his little sister Jem. His mum and dad broke up when he was three so he can’t remember his real mum but from what he heard, she was a terrible woman, though his stepmother’s not much better. She’s a witch, Mike hates her and so do I. Taylor’s not much better she’s fourteen, mum brought me over once when I was younger hoping that her and I would become friends, but that didn’t happen, instead I met Mike and we’ve been best friends ever since, he’s also my only friend. I’ve never really talked to Owen, he’s seven, and Jem’s only two so I can’t really say anything about her either.
School went by quickly today, nothing really interesting enough to write down though. Mike and I made our normal trip to the library, as we do every day. Mum finishes work at four so we get about an hour at the library while melody walks the short way to our aunt Mary’s house. Aunt Mary’s a lovely woman but she’s not our actual aunty, we just call her that. She loves it when we visit, she must get lonely by herself, I guess that’s why she chose to babysit Mel after school. Her husband died six years ago in a car crash, I feel bad for her but she seems to not mind.
After we finished, we walked to aunt Mary’s. Mum picks us up and we drive home, me and Mike sit in the back and chat while Melody tells mum everything that happened to her at school today. When we get to our street, we drop Mike home and then drive to ours. We chill around for a bit, eat dinner and head to bed.
