In Elgantis City, Genevieve Montgomery does not live for herself. She lives and breathes under the surveillance of her military father, works a job she cannot stand, and hangs around people she has no interest in. A mysterious killer is on the hunt for the blood of all high-ranking officers and their families, and when Genevieve becomes their next target, there is no room for discussion before she is sent off to be under the protection of a man the killer would never suspect.
After recently returning from a gruesome battle beyond Tria's walls, Silas Aventinus thinks it is stupid that he was chosen to babysit some girl. He is cold, brooding and despised by the Montgomery men for his unorthodox—and quite frankly, dangerous—ways of handling attacks beyond the walls. However, when a curvy blonde with a spitfire attitude shows up on his front steps, Silas realizes that the girl he was expecting to babysit is far from the age he was expecting. Silas presses his forehead to my temple; his slow, calm breaths against my skin cause the hairs on the back of my neck to rise. Someone tries to open the bathroom door again but he slams his palm against it, holding it shut.
"You are mine," he mutters, staring back into my eyes. "Your father may not approve of me but I've never given a shit about whether or not I have his fucking approval."
Silas puts his finger under my chin and lifts it. Our lips are so close... So close all I need to do is move a little closer. "You showed up on my doorstep asking for my protection—that's what I'm doing now. Damned or not, that is a promise I'm going to keep, Gem."
