Harry

This can't happen, it just really can't. They must be in one of those funny moods again. It's just a joke. Right? No, unfortunately this isn't a joke, it's going to happen whether he likes it or not.

His parents are getting divorced. No doubt about it, not after all the fights they've had recently. His parents haven't told them yet, but he's heard them talk. He was on his way to the kitchen to get some crisps when he heard his parents talking. He knew this was a private conversation but he just couldn't walk away like his legs didn't know how to move anymore.

"This can't go on like this, you know that yourself. This is not just about us, but about Harry too. How must he feel when his parents are always arguing about everything? Maybe it's just for the better if we stop trying, we've tried that so many times now and look where we've ended up."

From that moment on he knew for sure that his parents were getting a divorce and he couldn't do anything about it.

When he heard those words he knew enough and had gone upstairs again, slamming the door behind him. He was sure his parents heard that, so they already know he heard it too. So sooner or later they come into his room to tell them the news.

So there he is, drawing in his sketchbook, waiting for his parents to walk into the room.

As he had expected, after sitting there for another 10 minutes, the door opened and his mother steps in.

Harry just keeps drawing when he hears that his mother has sat down on his bed. Maybe she expects Harry to say something now, but he won't. He wants his mother to take the initiative to tell him.

A hand on his shoulder makes him look up, his mother looks at him with guilt and sadness in her eyes. Without Harry being able to say anything, he is pulled into a hug by his mother.

"I'm so sorry." She mumbles, after she pulled back from the hug. She walks over to the bed and pats next to her, asking Harry to sit next to her. Harry does as he is asked and sits down next to her, without saying anything, waiting for his mother to say something. "I'm really sorry honey, we've tried really hard, but things just didn't go well between us. You've noticed that yourself, even when you don't want to admit it. We argue so much these times and that's not healthy in a relationship. And we're doing this just for you, to make this better for you 'cause to see your parents arguing all the time is not good either. I know it's hard for you and I get it, your parents are getting divorced after being together for so long. I get it, but it's better for all of us. I love you so much and you really have to believe me when is say this was the best choice to make." After that Harry stays silent, thinking about what his mother just said.

It's really dawning on him now that he just has to accept it, no matter how difficult that is. His parents have to divorce or it will not end well. He knew it wasn't healthy for his parents to argue about everything, he knew that, but he just wouldn't admit it. But maybe that's just the best thing to do right now, just accept it, because there's nothing more that can be done about it. And maybe it is better this way.

So, Harry turns to his mother and for the first time this day he smiles a little, but not for long.

"I'm sorry too mom. I shouldn't have overheard that conversation. I understand that it is not healthy to argue every day, but I had hoped that it would be okay. But now I know that won't happen and it hurts. Who should I live with now? What if I can't choose between the two of you? I don't want to choose between the two of you." Now in this moment all those emotions come loose, he starts to cry.

And his mother is there for him to hug him and gently rub his back, whispering reassuring things in his ears, just like she used to.

After what feels like an hour of crying, his mother lets go of him, but rests her hands on his cheeks. "We'll all get through this okay? Your father is waiting for you downstairs, do you want to go to him now or should I tell him you'll be right there?"

Harry sniffs and wipes away any remaining tears, shaking his head. "No, I'll go see him now" He answers.

After Harry has been with his father and talked about it with him, he feels better. Of course it still hurts to know that they are getting divorced but after talking about it it hurts less.

He walks over to his desk and closes his sketchbook and puts it back where it came from. He is tired after such a day, so he decides to go to sleep. He closes the curtains in his room and quickly brushes his teeth. Then he shouts downstairs that he is going to sleep. Finally, he undresses down to his underwear and then crawls under the covers. He grabs his teddy bear as usual and pulls it against his chest. He always hug people while he's asleep and since he has no boyfriend, he once bought a teddy bear for it. It might be weird, but he likes it.

He was so tired that when he closed his eyes he fell asleep right away. So when his mother came in and kissed him on the forehead and said 'Good night sweetie' he didn't hear it.
