"Hey, Lucas!" I was lost in my own thoughts, but got pulled back to reality when I heard someone call my name. I turned around and saw Eddie heading my way, waving, with a big smile on his face.
"Hey man, what's up?" he greeted me when he caught up with me.
"I'm just heading home. I don't want to stay here for too long, you know, now that school's over and all. What're you up to?"
"Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm heading out to look for a job, I have to work during summer vacation." he said, sounding a bit irritated by the end.
"Don't you already have a job?" Eddie has worked ever since people started employing him. With his parents being alcoholics without jobs, Eddie has had to make enough money for himself and his little sister Samantha.
"The bastard fired me, said I was slacking." Eddie muttered and kicked a rock. I knew that his former boss must have been lying. Eddie would never slack off during work, he needs the money too much.
"When did this happen?" I asked him, ready to help him if needed, but he always refused my offers.
"About two weeks ago."
"And you haven't found anything since then?" I was a bit concerned, two weeks without a wage is a long time if you're already struggling with money.
"No, but I will."
"You know, you can always come work for my dad in his garage. He'd appreciate the help." My dad, a former gang member who dropped out of his gang when he met my mother, is a car mechanic and runs his own garage.
"It's cool man, I know how to get some money pretty fast."
"Just don't go doing something stupid." A lot of kids in this neighbourhood at our age gets involved in stuff like gangs, drug dealing, stealing and other things like that. A high amount of kids mug people around here on a daily basis. Many of them do it because they need money or they somehow got involved with the wrong people. Most of them end up not being able to get away from it all, they get addicted, caught by the police or sometimes die. Life around here is harsh and I don't want something like that to happen to Eddie, it would only increase his problems and put him and Samantha in danger.

Two weeks had passed since I last saw Eddie. I wondered if he had found a job. I was bored of just sitting around at home doing nothing so I decided that I would go out for a walk, maybe I'd run into Eddie. I went to put on my shoes when I heard my mum call my name.
"Lucas, are you going out?" she said from the kitchen.
"Yeah, I won't be out for too long, just want to see if Eddies out." I called back.
"Okay honey, be careful and hurry back for dinner."
"Heather dear, let the boy be. He's old enough to be out past dinner time if he wants to." That'd be my dad. He's way more laid back than my mum, but they both care about me and my younger sister Amy equally. They just show it in different ways. With dad being a former gang member, he knows this neighbourhood and which places are safe and which aren't. He has shown me the places I should avoid and taught me how to act around other people to avoid getting in trouble.
My mum's a bit overprotective. She grew up here too but she has never been involved with gangs and stuff. You could say that my mum's my role model. I want to stay out of trouble, finish school, get a good job and achieve something in my life. It doesn't necessarily have to be something high and mighty, as long as I'm pleased just like my mum, she owns her own grocery store and seems pretty content with it.
