In this wide open room, I am alone. On one knee, head down, I do not so much as breathe, for fear it makes more sound than is allowed.

And then, he speaks. A low, rumbling voice that demands attention. I sneak a glance.

"I am pleased with your work. You never disappoint. No time to rest, however, as I have another request of you." This is usually how it is. Waving off his guards, he continues.

"This one is from me, personally."

What? How rare. I acknowledge this.

"I am honored. I gladly accept."

"I had no doubt you would. You are not the type to waste a job as good as this." Very true. I live up to my title.

"What I say is not to leave this room. Understood?" Of course I do, this is the simplest part of every job, but to say as much would be disrespectful. I remain silent.

He composes himself, taking a deep breath. I have seen this many times, nearly always before someone discloses personal and necessary information to me. It seems different this time. Maybe it's a matter of who it is.

"It is an assassination that I desire." I enjoy these. A killer instinct occupies much of my being, after all.

"She threatens the safety of our world. It is not certain yet, but.." An uncharacteristically loud swallow makes me look up, and our eyes meet for the briefest of moments. Everything burns.

I look away.

He finally goes on, oblivious to my trembling.

"We cannot afford to let her live. This is your job. Kill Alexis Knight."

His final words follow me as I leave the room.

"I am counting on you. Do not let me down."

And I am reminded that we are simply a lord and his job hunter.
