"I bet you can't beat me this time Fern!"

"Bet I can!" As we raced down the hill I felt the the summer breeze hitting against my face. I loved the feeling of freedom, like I could do anything.

"Hahaha I'm winning!" my best friend Avelina boasted. At that word, I sprinted past her and smacked my hand on the fence post.

"You cheated," she moaned sarcastically, trailing behind me dramatically.

"Did not."

"Did too."

"Did not."

"Did too."

"Did not."

"Did too."

"Did not."

"Did not."

"Did too-agh!" I narrowed my eyes at her, and she smiled sickly sweet.

"Human error is natural, Fern. Don't be upset that I took advantage of it." Avelina flicked her sleek brown hair carelessly over her shoulder as she leaned against the wooden fence post.

"You say it as if you're not human." I laughed."Maybe I'm not." She said mysteriously. Obviously I was giving her a funny stare because she laughed once again, and the heartiness of it warmed me up.

"I'm only joking, you should have seen your face, Fern."

I shook my head and laughed as well. "But you do remember that we have chores to finish, right?"

"Exactly."

I felt as though I've memorized my best friend inside and out, from her long legs, to her light brown hair, the deep dimples in her cheeks and the way her tawny brown eyes twinkle whenever she laughs. She is about five inches taller, thin and graceful, more than I'll ever be.

I'm merely an average girl with an slightly pudgy torso and just plain legs, as well as ordinary brown hair that goes to my shoulders and plain brown eyes.

Avelina always tell me that inner beauty is what really counts, and I've got enough to go around, but I know that she secretly likes all the attention she gets from all the town boys. Not that I hate her for it, I respect her and often wonder how such a regal girl could end up here in the countryside, working on her friends' parents' farm. But her heart is in the right place most of the time and we push through the chores together. We are both 'only childs', forming a very sisterly bond between us.

We heard yelling coming from the farm and exchanged a sideways glance. "I guess that's our cue."

"I'll race you, cheater," she grinned.

"Oh it's on," I bursted into a sprint and as does she and we tromped through the soft green grass.
