Makenna's POV
"I can't breathe!" She exclaimed, coming up to the water's surface gasping for air coughing.
"That was 20 seconds longer than your last score," Malia cheers, clicking the side of her watch while Makenna swims to climb on top of her board.
"Hurry, we're gonna be late!" Alana shouts from the shore, waving us down.
"Crap! That's right," Malia says, checking her watch again. Scrambling to get to shore, we hopped on our boards, and paddled as fast as we could.
"We don't want to get a late slip on our last day of school, do we?" Wailea remarks as soon as we touch the white wash.
...
It's the last day of school until summer officially starts. Then it's straight to work and training. Me and the girls; Malia, Alana, and Wailea all live in this poorly refurbished house in the North Shore. It's nothing too special since it's all we can sort of afford at this time. Since my parents unexpectedly went missing and no one has been able to find them, it has been hard on me because I don't really have a family. The girls are my family."Quick! Quick!" Malia rushed us. Malia is like the mom of the family. Always keeping us together and in check. Wailea is the brains of the group. Alana is the dumb one. And me, well I'm the hopeful destined one. The one who has goals of making it big like Bethany Hamilton and Kelly Slater. Will it ever work? I hope so because I have a lot of people depending on me.
We made it to school just before the first bell rang. With our hair dripping and our shirts semi soaked, in Homeroom we go.
"Ugh girls, you're wet!" Our Teacher, Mrs. Green said. We all looked at each other and laughed obnoxiously."Mrs. Green, with all due respect, how do you expect Makenna to win The Eddie Big Wave Invitational with that attitude?" Malia asked.
"Just go get cleaned up in the bathroom. I don't need a trail of water all over my mopped floors," she chuckled. We walked to the bathrooms and took advantage of the hand dryers for ourselves. It's a nice feeling after coming from the cold waters.
...The girls and I were currently walking to the locker rooms at the Lani Kai hotel to get changed into our work attire. Walking there we saw the most irritating girl in the world, Teya. Let's just say we weren't the best of friends when in school. We used to be close when we were younger, but we just drifted apart and all of a sudden she hates me.
"I'm gonna die," I groan. "Not only did I have to deal with Teya during school, now summer?"
"Apparently her dad is funding the hotel," Malia said.
"How fun," I mentally curse.
"You guys used to be so close. Whatever happened to that?" Wailea asked, opening up her locker.
"After my parents went missing, she started distancing herself. Then she like hated me or something," I shrugged. We left it at that and went out of the locker rooms to work. I work poolside attending to people, Malia is a lifeguard, Alana works at the Snack Shack, and Wailea is the receptionist at the front desk.
I walked to the Pau Hana bar to see Kai, the hottest surf instructor there. I have like a major crush on him, but that's not the point.
"Hey Kai!" I smiled, sitting next to him.
"Careful, lady at 2 o'clock might be needing towels," he says, directing towards the lady who almost fell in the pool. I just giggled.
"Kai, this isn't the time to be lounging!" Our boss, Bensen, said sternly.
"Right away boss," he saluted. "That's my que," he winked. And with that, he stood up and left.
"People's drinks are looking empty," Bensen said, shaking his head.
"On it sir," I walked over to Alana at the Snack Shack to put in an order to not only see the line long, but to see her flirting with some guy causing the line to be long. God I love working here. I don't have to stand in long lines and wait.
"Order!" I said, slapping the paper on the table causing her to jolt up. "Oh and stop flirting with the guy. Lines long and Bensen is walking around," I tell her as the guy awkwardly moves to the side.
"Uh- I was so not flirting with the guy," she choked.
"You were babe!" I shouted while walking away.
"Makenna, could you be a dear and get me a Voss. My throat is parched," Teya said, stopping me. I gave her the are you kidding me expression. "I mean I can gladly just tell daddy—"
"Save the daddy crap. Right away Ms. Maxwell," I rolled my eyes. I quickly ran to the Snack Shack to get her tap water and I made it all fancy. She won't notice the difference, or so I thought.
"This tastes like shit! I'm severely allergic to tap water," she complained. "Go get me another one!" She demanded. The customers are always right, I tell myself. It's alright. I shrugged it off and got her some Voss. Until she changed her mind and asked for a strawberry smoothie. This girl has the audacity to make me do all this work for her hell she aint.
