We rode the elevator down to the Closet. I dashed in, scanning the racks with Betty breathing heavily behind me.
"Amanda, I can't do this, it's STEALING from work!"
"Betty, think of it this way, you don't even WORK here anymore."
"That's even worse, Amanda! Besides, my suitcases are already packed!"
"We'll make room," I assured her. "Just get rid of THIS," I pointed at her weird scarf/ascot thing, "and replace it with THIS!" I presented her with a new pair of peep toe Louboutins. "C'mon Betty! London is sophisticated! And your ponchos and sombreros may work on Daniel, but no one in London is gonna be fooled!" I looked at her, the little girl from Queens with her tiny red glasses and frizzy hair. I rushed to her. "Ugh, Betty, I am going to miss you SO much!!" I lifted her and twirled her around. "I mean, who are Mark and I going to mock now?!"
"I don't know? My replacement?"
"I guess, but it won't be the same." We were in Fey's Dungeon now, and I handed Betty the clothes I had picked out. "Here."
She took them from me and tossed them unceremoniously into her purse. I shuddered as I watched Prada mingle with WHATEVER was in her bag. "Thanks a lot, Amanda."
She turned to go.
"Betty?" I called after her. "I really am going to miss you," I said hesitantly.
She smiled at me. "I know."That was the last time I ever saw her.
