This story takes place at the beginning of season one of The Umbrella Academy. It is the prequel to my previous book, 'Number Eight | Enemies to Lovers | Five Hargreeves x Y/N.' I will use Viktor's earliest pronouns and gender identity for this book, as it follows most of the original plot.
Warning: This story contains violence, sexuality (including smut), strong language, and other mature themes.

Five Hargreeves had just escaped his pestering and dimwitted family, arriving at his childhood favorite donut shop. Griddy's Donuts had progressed into a run-down crap shoot, but Five was desperate for a cup of coffee and mentally crossed his fingers as he marched into the dimly lit diner.
A young woman, who appeared to be around Five's physical age, dressed in a racerback black tank top and green cargo pants, sat hunched over on one of the bar stools, impatiently ringing the shiny metal bell on the counter. Five, entertained by the girl's annoyance, took a seat one stool away from her with a smirk.
The girl had ceased her ringing, allowing Five a vacancy to talk.
"Long day?" He asked with a chuckle.
"You have no idea," She mumbled, clearly not amused as she stared straight ahead.
Before Five could engage in any more small talk, an elderly waitress, who looked more fitted for retirement, hastily shuffled to the customers. She sighed, apologizing for her absence, and explained that the sink was clogged with a nervous laugh.
Neither Five nor the girl cared for her excuses but continued to sit patiently.
"So, what'll it be?" Asked the woman, whose sewn-in name tag read 'Agnes' as she looked back and forth between the girl and boy.
"After you," Five gestured to the girl who had waited longer.
"I'll take a coffee, black," She said.
"Same here," Added Five, impressed by the girl's impeccable taste.
Agnes, although slightly concerned, fetched the drinks and placed them in front of the teens who sat in silence.
Five, in search of cash, reached into his pockets but was quickly wavered as the woman next to him took out a twenty.
"I got his drink," She said, exhibiting the first signs of tolerance for the stranger.
Agnes politely nodded and accepted the money, scrambling to the back of the diner for change.
"Thanks," Said Five, surprised by the girl's generosity.
The girl in question was trying to enjoy her coffee, and simply nodded. Five chugged the rest of his, not bothering to savor it as he would have liked to due to his recollection of his true mission: saving the world. After swiping away the last drop from his lips with the back of his hand, Five climbed off the bar stool and turned to the exit.
"Thanks again," He said to the girl as he prepared to leave the shop.
"Don't mention it," She responded, not bothering to turn around.
Five readied to push the door but paused as he spotted the mob of assassins marching toward the diner.
"Shit," He mumbled, remembering the innocent and presumably helpless girl that sat amid a possible massacre. "Hey, listen," He said, approaching the girl from behind. "You have to get out of here-"
