I squint my eyes as I turn my phone on looking at the time.

"You've got to be kidding me," I grumble. I woke up three minutes before my alarm went off. That's bullshit.

I turn my alarm off and roll off my bed onto the floor. Its about five in the morning and I'm about to get ready for my first day of work.

Last year, I was a substitute teacher for Harrison Middle School. The 6th grade English teacher from last year, got fired for having weed on school grounds. Idiot. Anyway, I wanted to be an English teacher for middle schoolers and the position just opened up, I got put in it.

They took all of Ms. Henderson's stuff out of the room over the summer and I got to decorate it. Today is the first day I get to be a real teacher in a room full of kids. I'm excited but I'm also nervous. I've worked with kids before in highschool for tutoring and in college as a student teacher, but I never in my life did it by myself.

When I was in highschool, I got two years of college done and only had to go to school for another two years to get my teaching degree. After that I got a job immediately in my own school, Harrison. I subbed for a year, and here I am.

I sit up off the floor and walk into the bathroom to pee. I brush my teeth, and wash my face and then I go out into the bedroom and get dressed.

I put on a pair of dark blue skinny jeans with no holes in them, a white t-shirt, and a gray scarf for a little extra. I throw on a pair of converse and then brush my long brown hair. I pull it back with a hair clip. I need to look nice but not out of this world. I would wear something actually stylish but let's just say my style isn't school appropriate.

While I'm putting on the smallest amount make-up I can, I hear a light knock on my door.

"Come in." I smile, putting on a clear lip gloss. I turn my head and see my brother, Shane, standing in my door way.

"Hey, um. Can I ask you something?"

"Sure kid. What's up?" I stand up from my vanity and make sure I have everything in my bag.

"You know how Adalynn graduated?"

"Yeah..."

"And how she's going to college now?"

"Yeah..." I start to get a little aggravated from him not getting to the point. I'm not a patient person.

"AND how I don't have a license?"

"Shane, get to the fucking point," I turn my full attention to him and he freezes up. He doesn't like when I cuss at him.

"I'm sorry but you know I'm not a very patient person. Please tell me what you want to ask me," I calm down and his face relaxes.

Shane is a very sensitive person, a trait he gets from our mom, me on the other hand, I'm all dad. Shane is touchy and you have to be careful with his sweet 16 year old self.

"Sorry, I wanted to ask if I could ride to school with you? I got ready early just in case, if not I can probably walk." he looks down at his feet and fiddles with his fingers.

"Of course buddy, you would have to hang out in my room until the highschool doors open." I turn back to my bag and grab my phone off my night stand.

Shane runs back to his room and grabs his book bag. I turn my room lights off and we go out to my car. My beautiful, blue Ford Explorer. Don't hate on the car, its perfect for me.

It's funny to see all the cars parked in my dad's driveway. There's mine, Adalynn, my sister's, my mom's, and my dad's. I still live with my parents until I can afford a place of my own.

We pull onto the road and begin our journey to school. I always knew I would come back to this school one day. Weather it be to drop off my own kid, or to be a teacher, like I am now. I love what I do. Wouldn't change it for the world.

We make it to the school around six o'clock. I need to be here a bit early to make sure I have everything ready for my kids. This is gonna be fun.

We both get out of the car and we walk to the side door. I slide my key in, open the door, and walk inside. Only a few lights are on in the hallways and all of the rooms are dark. I walk to my room and unlock the door to it too.

My room is well decorated, I remember when I was in school, a teacher with a fun personality and a fun room was so much easier to enjoy, than a boring teacher and boring room. I made sure to spice mine up. Its not colorful. It has more beige and tans than anything but it looks homey and nice.

"I'm so fucking bored" Shane says spinning in my chair as I write note cards with the kids name on them. He hasn't shut up for the past 20 minutes. He needs to stop.

"Listen." I turn to him. "One, shut the heck up. Two, stop cussing in my classroom. I don't need to get fired on my first day. Third, if you want something to do, go get that survey paper and look for typos. It would kill me if I had a typo on the first paper I make as an English teacher. Please and thank you."

He grabs the paper and starts looking at he words. He gets a highlighter and highlights a word. I knew it. I misspelled something.

I get all of the note cards done for all of my classes and I stack them up according to what period I have them. I set all the cards on my table in the front of the room and then I hear a knock at the door.

I turn to look at my boss, the principal, smiling at me. She's a sweet old lady.

"Hey Miss Aker, I was checking to make sure everything is ok, I hope you're doing alright."

"Oh, thank you. I'm just fine though. I got these kids under controll."

"Good, Shane dear?" he snaps his head to look at her, "You can go into the gym if you want to, there are other kiddos in there." he grabs his stuff and gets up from my chair. He walks over to me and kisses my cheek.

"I love you, I'll be here after school." he smiles and gives me a hug.

"Always the gentleman." I smile back and he walks out of my room with Mrs. Anderson.

꧁꧂

The kiddo's start to file into my class as I'm writing my name on the bored:

Ms. Aker

The kids all take a seat where ever cause I haven't made a seating chart yet. I'll do that tomorrow.

Once everything gets settled down one more little kid is standing by my door. I figure he's lost. I walk over to him and offer him a big smile.

"Do you know where you are supposed to be?" I ask him.

He shakes his head at me.

"What's your name I can help you." I walk him back to my desk and I sit at my computer.

"Dylan Pierce" he says really shyly.

I look up his name and take him to his classroom. I get back to mine and shut the door.

"Hi, my name is Miss Aker and I will be your English teacher for the rest of the year."
