"Ginger Kids: Children with red hair, light skin, and freckles. We've all seen them - on the playground, at the store, walking on the streets - they creep us out and make us feel sick to our stomachs. I'm talking of course about... ginger kids." - Cartman
Cartman is wrong, a ginger's red hair, light skin, and freckles are all passed down genetically. Red hair is not determined by the lack of a soul or gingervitis.
There have been many historical red heads through history which include:
Alexander The Great
Queen Elizabeth 1
Galileo
Dave Mustaine (strawberry blonde)
Marylin Monroe (she dyed her hair blonde)
Mark Twain
Ron Howard
and many more
Sadly, having red hair has also become something that is used as a taunt. Historians believe that this is due to English people's dislike of the Danes who invaded their country in the 10th century. Also, in the Middle Ages vampires and witches would be described as redheaded.
Happily, during the Elizabethan era, red hair became a desirable quality. Queen Elizabeth 1 had red hair and having red hair became fashionable and women in paintings were often portrayed as redheads. Even today red shades are still the most sought-after hair dye colours and the people of countries such as India, Iran, and Pakistan use henna to get that red glint in their hair.
Red hair, freckles, experts at Irish dancing, and blessed with 'the gift of the gab' are the usual Irish stereotypes. However, studies have shown that only ten percent of Irish people have red coloured hair.
In fact, it is the Scottish who have the most redheads with a massive 47 percent. Whether it's because of the Hollywood stereotype of the Irish as being redheaded and using the phrase 'begorra' or not it is an idea that we're stuck with.
Ranga Facts:
1.Both parents must be carriers of the mutated MC1R gene to be able to produce redhead offspring, of which there is a 25% chance if they don't have red hair themselves.
2.Less than 2% of the world's population have ginger hair. That's approximately 140 million people. Scotland boasts the highest percentage of natural redheads, with 13% (40% might carry the gene there) while Ireland comes in second with 10%.
3.Because it holds its pigment tighter than any other hair colour, red strands need to have their pigment stripped before being dyed by bleaching which, of course, damages the hair. Stay red!
4.Red hair is thicker than other colours. Each strand of red hair is generally thicker than other shades which compensates for the fact that redheads have less hair. Apparently, they have – on average – 90,000 strands while blondes have 110,000, and brunettes have 140,000 (being a red head I can safely say that that rangers have less hair).
5. Beware, red heads are more likely to develop skin cancer. Because of their commonly fair skin and sensitivity to ultraviolet light, redheads are more likely to develop skin cancer. The International Journal of Cancer reported in 2010 that natural redheads are approximately two and a half times as likely to develop the dangerous cancer as people with other hair hues (and I'm an Australian ranga so that's even more dangerous).
6. Blue eyed rangers are super rare. Blue eyes and red hair form the rarest combo on earth. Most redheads will have brown eyes, followed by hazel or green shades.
7.Red heads can change temperature quicker. This is because – according to research – redheads are more sensitive to hot and cold pain (I have to walk outside in spring wearing three jackets sometimes). Nothing to do with their mythical fiery temperament!
8.Red hair will never turn grey; it simply fades to white via rose gold when the time comes.
9.Gingers can produce their own vitamin D. As they can't sufficiently absorb Vitamin D (it's down to their lower melanin-concentration), redheads internally produce their own Vitamin D when they're exposed to low light conditions.
(This is to sciency and stuff so I'm gonna put this in)
"Gingers are creepy. And one night, when you're all sleepin' in your room, the gingers are gonna getcha. They're gonna GETCHA!" - Cartman
Yeah, that's right whoever is racist to gingers better sleep with one eye open.
But we can never forget the ginger we hate: Ed Sheeran
Gingers are tired of being outcasts to society, a minority. Has it ever occurred to people that gingers are a race/minority and that that makes them racist. Some schools in England have kick a ginger day (inspired by South Park episode Ginger Kids)!
Well, I don't have much else to say apart from stop ginger hate so...
