Arnold stood looking out the window at the clear starry sky, a look of distress on his face.
"Something wrong?" Kaitlyn asked.
"You mean besides the fact we have to sleep in these roman garments because we neglected to carry pajamas on our person?" Arnold asked in reply with a smile.
"I was thinking bigger than that."
"It's just that until now, there was that doubt that we were really on another planet rather than back in time."
"So what changed?" asked Kaitlyn
"The stars. There isn't a single constellation I can find. We can't be anywhere near earth. Otherwise we might be able to see some familiar shape up there," Arnold answered.
Kaitlyn sort of gave him a look. "That's what finally sold it for you?" She shook her head "Well I'm hitting the sack. Feel free to join me," she climbed into the bed. The matress was firm but comfortable. There was only one blankets, which given th heat may have already been more than enough.
After a moment Arnold got up and climbed in as well and they tried to get some sleep. They were both still tired from the transport there and this was the first chance they really had to get some proper rest since they arrived. Under the circumstances, both of them dozed off rather quickly
The next morning Kris shifted in his bed and moved his face into a sunbeam. His face wrinkled at the sudden change of temperature and he opened an eye only to quickly shut it again.
With a groan he pushed back the cover and sat up. In doing this Valerie stirred and moaned softly.
"It's morning, we best be getting up," he said shaking Valerie a bit to wake her.
"Mmm, five more minutes."
"Come on. You want to find a way back don't you?" Kris asked as he stood up.
Valerie groaned. "Shit. We're still here," She rolled over and slowly sat up. She looked over to Kris with sleepy eyes. She had really been hoping they'd wake up in their own beds in the drafty shelters.
Kris looked at her and his eyes went wide. He gasped and nearly jumping back a foot.
"What?" asked Valerie. She had still be a little sleepy, but his reaction had shocked her the rest of the way to being awake. She looked around in a panic for a hideous insect or something
Kris was half laughing when he answered. "Your hair. I've never seen you in the mornings before your shower."
There was no mirror, but her hands went up to her head. Her hair was in a mess, sticking up in all directions. Like something you'd only see in an animated cartoon. She immediately started twisting her hair into a braid. Her face went a little red from embarrassment. She felt like she'd grown a lions main.
Kris thought back to their trip through town. about half the women he spotted, had their hair in braids, or even ponytails. Most had left it down. It made him wonder how they kept their hair so clean and smooth with no running water. He knew in ancient Earth, woman had their hair done up because they didn't wash regularly.
Thinking about yesterday sort of hit him. By this point, the shock factor had passed, but everything they went through felt like a dream. Similar to Valerie, he nearly forgot where he was when he woke. Everything felt so surreal. His thoughts were taken away as he picked up the distinct smell of food.
Valerie finished her hair the the two of them left their room and into the kitchen where Anthieyah was cooking up breakfast.
"Good morning," Kris said cheerfully. He had slept great.
