☀︎Evangeline ☀︎

Staring out the window at the dark sky, I wonder how it came to this. I was never meant to be back.

"Gus gives me back my doll or I'll tell my mummy on you," I yell to Agustus as he runs through the freshly cut grass, giggling as he waves my doll in his hands. "That's it, I'm telling and you aren't getting none of her brownies" turning around and running to the backdoor through to the kitchen where I hear mummy talking to father. "Mummy, Gus took my-"

"THAT'S IT, I'm leaving. I'm taking our daughter and going, I will not be made an idiot in my own home" mother yelled at father, veins pulsing in her forehead as if she would burst with fury. I quickly duck behind the door.

"You can't leave me, what will the people say? I have finally got your father on my side. If you leave now, It will ruin everything for me." Father tried to reason with her, taking a cautious step toward her. Red lipstick smeared around his face. Mummy never wears red, she always wears pink.

" That's all you care about, isn't it? You're not even sorry about what you have done. You have destroyed this family. I couldn't care less what people think, at least they would know the truth about you, how unfaithful you have been to this family. This is the final straw, I'm done." My mother says, turning swiftly towards the door. She sees me hiding near the entrance, quickly wiping her eyes as if trying to hide her pain from me. "Evangeline, sweety go and start packing your bags."

She tells with a small, sad smile on her face.

"Beatrice, don't do this to our family. Think of our daughter." Father says, grasping mothers arm.

Mother looks me dead in the eye, hesitating slightly before saying "I am." Pulling her arm from his grasp.

Two hours later, our car was packed with most of my & mother's belongings. Me sitting in the back with my brown bunny named pudding and mummy getting behind the wheel, trying to wipe her tears before I could see, turning to me with a sad smile on her face." we're going to have a good life baby, I promise." Turning back and starting the car, we drove past the house. Father standing in the window with his drink watching.

Mother and I were meant to live our lives far away from here, we were settled in our cosy little routine, never having to worry about what people were saying or who was watching. Now I have to face it all alone. Oh, mother, how I wish you were still here.

Pulling through the driveway, the stones clapping off the wheels of the cab. I see my father and his wife standing in front of the house. Coming to a stop, I reluctantly open the door, thanking the driver as he pulls my bags from the back.

" Evangeline, welcome home." Father greets me, going in for an awkward hug as I keep my arms at my side. " meet my wife, Amelia. Amelia, this is my daughter, Evangeline." Amelia, wearing a fake smile on her face slowly raises her hand for me to shake. Almost looking disgusted that I was going to touch her. It's not like I wanted to touch her either. Father gave me a slight nudge, raising my hand to shake her, giving her a tight smile.

"Edward, your stepbrother is currently at school. So you will meet him at dinner, which will be at exactly 6 pm. You are expected to be present. Amelia, please show Evangeline to her room."

"But Henry, Why can't we get the maids to do it? That is their job after all."Amelia, disappointed, looks toward my father, who gives her a sharp look. She turns to me with a pout on her face. " Come on then, someone will bring your bags up." Following her into the house and up the white wooden stairs along the hallway to the end door, I opened Said door and turned toward me sharply. " this is your room, I'm sure it's a lot better than what you were living in." Laughing slightly," our rooms are on the other side of the house." She finished, walking past me too, I imagine her room. Dumbfounded, I stood there looking after her. I can't believe she just said that. Who does she think she is? Walking into the room, it's larger than my room back home but has no personality. Everything is white with a light wood twin bed pushed to the right side of the room, and a large bay window at the end of the bed which looks perfect for reading books. On the opposite side is the wardrobe next to a small white desk completely empty. Next to me is a door which leads to an ensuite with a claw feet bath.

Knock knock

An elderly woman with her whisky grey hair pulled up into a neat bun walks in with two younger women all wearing typical maids' outfits. "Miss Lancaster, sorry for the intrusion. I'm Sophie, We bring your luggage." All putting my bags down by the wardrobe." would you like help to put everything away."

"Nice to meet you, please call me Evangeline or Evie. Thank you all so much for bringing my bag up but I should be fine to put it all away." I said sweetly to them all with a genuine smile on my face.

A few hours later, I had finally finished packing everything. The room finally looked like mine with books stacked in the corner, my laptop on the desk with a photo of me and mum from our last trip to the beach. My clothes are neatly organised in the wardrobe, all it needs now is some greenery but that will have to wait until I can get to the shops. It's 5:56, so I better start heading to dinner now. Giving my room one final look over, making sure everything is how I want it. I head out my bedroom door down the hallway and the stairway to the dining room, where my father's family is already seated.

Father swiftly turns to me with a disapproving look, " You're late Evangeline, you also could have tidied yourself up before coming down." I'm barely even a minute late and it's only dinner. Whom am I trying to impress? "Anyway, Thomas, meet your sister, Evangeline. Evangeline, meet your brother, Thomas."

Thomas had a very classic rich boy look about him from his athletic physique covered in designer clothes to his ashy blonde hair lightly swept against his forehead and greyish blue eyes angrily staring at me. "Hello, sister." He said sarcastically to me, throwing a big grin my way which seemed to please father as I sat down next to father who was at the head of the table while Amelia and Thomas sat opposite me. Nodding my head in greeting towards my stepbrother. I turn towards the maid as she sets my plate down, thanking her quietly. Eating a few bits of the baby potatoes and chicken, leaving the veg til last. Father sets down his cutlery, "Evangeline, you will be attending the same school as your brother, starting Monday. Your uniform is in your wardrobe. Thomas, you will be taking your sister to school until her car arrives." Thomas, through gritted teeth, agrees eyes cut sharp at me as if it's my fault. "I expect you both to be on your best behaviour, you are setting an example of our name and I will not have it disrespected again." Clearly taking a dig at my mother, dropped my fork and pushed out of my chair. "Where do you think you are going, young lady?" Father snapped at me. " I have not dismissed you." Walking out of the room back to my bedroom, I hear Father thundering steps behind me. " You will not disrespect me in my own home, Evangeline. You are my daughter and you will do as I say." He takes my arm and turns me towards him. "You may have had a few bad days but this behaviour will not be accepted, go to your room and think about your actions."

"Gladly" pulling my arm from him, slamming my door behind me. Throwing myself onto the bed and letting sleep take over.
