Yunho Coffee Shop AU
The bell let out a tinkling chime as you pushed your way through the door. Having forgotten your umbrella, you were nearly soaked through and unable to piece any thoughts together outside of cold and wet. This little coffee shop had seemed to be the only thing open at this late of an hour, you recalled yourself cursing each time you had come upon a locked door beforehand.
String lights were hung from the beams on the ceiling and emitted the faintest orange glow. There were two armchairs positioned in front of a fireplace to your right. Not wanting to ruin a chair you pulled one of the wooden ones out from under a nearby table and dragged it over, your jeans sloshing with every step. You sat down with a heavy sigh and reached your hands over to the flames.
Shit, you still had about three blocks to go before you'd reach your apartment and the rain didn't seem like it would let up anytime soon. It had all started with this morning, if your roommate's cat hadn't knocked over that vase of flowers you might have left on time and had remembered to grab your umbrella. And you couldn't even be mad at her, because after looking into Byeol's wide blue eyes all your anger had diminished. It was San who had left the vase near the edge of the countertop anyways. You made a mental note to give him a playful punch on the arm for it later.
"Excuse me," A soft voice murmured.
You glanced up to your left. A man with soft brown eyes and a cautionary smile towered above you. The soft edges to his face and the slight wave to his dark hair made him look ethereal to say the least. While you had believed it to be a metaphor, you found yourself, quite literally, too stunned to speak. All that was running through your mind now was how beautiful the person standing beside you was and how much of a soaked rat you must be looking like right now. You ran a hand over your hair and tried to find something to say in reply.
"Um... would you like this?" He handed you a white paper cup with a kraft cup sleeve.
You blinked in reply and accepted his offer, holding the drink in both of your hands. It was pleasurably warm and soothed your aching fingers.
"Thank you," You managed.
"No worries, you look like you could use a warm drink," He mused in reply, "Would you mind?" He gestured to the open armchair beside you.
You shook your head, beads of water fell from your hair, "Not at all."
As he got seated you glanced over your shoulder and realized that the coffee shop is entirely empty save for one younger guy on his laptop in the far corner.
"Do you normally have much business this late?"
He smiled slightly, "No, not really."
"Then why stay open this late, if you don't mind me asking?" You blew on your drink and took a small sip. Whatever it is has some strong spices brewed in it. It tasted like Autumn. Your eyes widened and you took another sip.
He chuckled at your reaction, "I enjoy it. You'd be surprised at how many people randomly find their way here late at night and need a warm drink or some useless advice from a barista."
You smiled at that. The fire was making quick work out of drying your clothes. You set your drink down and peeled off your jacket so it could dry better.
"I could understand that. It seems very peaceful late at night."
He nodded in agreement.
"Plus," He added, "I made a promise to a very persuasive friend."
He glances over at the guy in the corner too immersed in his work to notice. He had large headphones positioned on his head over his dark hair and several bracelets stacked on both of his wrists. A denim jacket was slung over the chair beside him and you can make out the edge of a tattoo peeking from beneath his right t-shirt sleeve.
"He looks... cool." You said.
He chuckled, "He'd like that you said that. I won't tell him, he'd gain too much confidence from it."
You observed the way his nose crinkled slightly at the thought.
"You talking about me Yunho?" The guy in the corner pulled one side of the headphones off his ear.
Yunho's eyes widened and he shook his head, "Of course not, go back to making your song."
"Hey, it's turning out really good. I hope people like it." The song maker spouted.
"They will." Yunho mused in reply.
His simple words are full of reassurance and even you felt calmer because of them. Your eyes wander to the clock ticking about the fireplace. It was a quarter past two and you were feeling grateful that tomorrow was your day off. Your phone buzzed in your pocket and you slipped it out into your hand. Thankfully it was waterproof or this would have been another disaster to deal with. You clicked on the screen.
"Where the hell are you?"
A text from San. Then another,
"You're alive right??"
You shot back,
"Yes. Forgot umbrella. Currently sitting in a cafe soaking wet lol."
"My roommate was wondering where I was." You explain the text's to Yunho.
He nodded.
"I have an umbrella you can borrow if you need to get home now."
"You do?" The thought of a warm shower sounded amazing, but you also did not want to the leave the company of this beautiful stranger so soon.
"Yeah, let me grab it for you." He stood up front he chair and disappeared through an archway behind the counter.
He returned with a clear umbrella with a wooden hook handle.
You had finished your delicious drink, so maybe it was time for this night to end. You sigh and stand from your chair.
"How much for the drink?" You asked him.
He shook his head and waved a hand dismissively.
"So free drink, I use your fireplace, and you're giving me an umbrella all for no charge? That doesn't seem fair."
"Well, this umbrella is the only one I have so I will be expecting you to return it." His eyes gleamed and a smirk passed over his pink lips, "Say... tomorrow?"
You dipped your head slightly to hide your growing smile, "I can do that."
You collected your jacket and sent San a text that you'd be home soon. You both made your ways to the entrance at a comfortably slow pace. His side brushing your shoulder gently with every other step. He pushed the door open, that bell chiming softly once more, and revealed the harsh sound of rainfall. He propped the door open with his boot and pushed the umbrella open through the door.
He held it out for you and you received the handle from his grasp, stepping outside beneath the umbrella. The sound of the raindrops on the umbrella made you slightly sleepy.
"Thank you again." You stammered and offered him a smile.
He shook his head once more, "Did you like the spice drink?"
You nodded.
"Okay, so tomorrow I will have something else for you, perhaps something with whipped cream?"
You widened your eyes and he chuckled, taking that as a yes.
"See you then." He affirmed.
"See you." You sang in reply.
You stepped away from the coffee shop and out onto the empty street, your stomach doing flip-flops at the thought of seeing him again tomorrow. You pondered the set of circumstances that had led you to pushing through that door an hour or two ago and a soft smile spread across your lips. You made your way home, expectantly awaiting the events of tomorrow.
