Sally checked her phone again, checking to see if Jeremiah had text her back.
"Everything okay? You've been looking at your phone a lot?" Her boyfriend asked, cutting at his steak. Sally nodded a little dismissively, poking around at her food.
Owen had taken her out to eat for her birthday, a while there were no fancy restaurants in their small town, he decided to splurge with a nice steak dinner at one of the diners. She would appreciate the gesture, but she wasn't a big dinner for a present type gal. At least it was a free meal, so it could have been worse.
"Sally? Hey, wasn't expecting to see you here!"
Sally perked up to see Jeremiah being seated by a waitress nearby, him leaving her to go to her table. She knew he knew she was here, she texted him she was bored, but she wasn't going to press it.
"Jer! Hey!"
"Happy Birthday Sally, good I caught you in time."
"Yeah, weekend birthdays can suck, I wasn't able to catch you. But I'm glad you're here!" Sally scooted over, patting at the seat for him to sit down.
"Oh, I thought you were going to get set up over there? You can always talk to Sally later?" Owen spoke up rather meekly, knowing full well what his girlfriend was about to say, but wanted to make an attempt at an interjection.
"Can't you see were talking Owen?" Sally gave him a look of annoyance at his rudeness, smiling once Jer sat down next to her.
"You've had her all-day man; you can live without her for two fucking minutes." Jer waved Owen silent, and put the plastic bag he was carrying onto the table.
"Oh, what's that what's that??" Sally tried to peek inside, Jer pushing her face back with his hand.
"It's your fucking birthday, you know surprises are a thing?"
"Fuck I hate surprises, just tell me what it is?" She whined, clinging to his shirt and gave him a pout and pleading eyes.
"Have a good night sally, and happy birthday, I'll take care of the bill and see you at school."
Neither of them paid Owen any mind, sally too busy pawing at the bag to care.
"Yeah, thanks Owen, love you, bye." She said without looking at him. Jer raised a hand to say goodbye but also not breaking his sight with the giggly blond.
"Well, you said you were bored with your steak shit, so I got you something more your style." He beamed, pulling out a white box, enough to fit in his meaty hands. He pulled open the lid and sally let out a high-pitched squeal of absolute delight.
"Holy fucking shit! Is that a Iverly's Bakery cupcake??" Her eyes lit up with stars and her mouth hung open, taking the box into both of her hands. "These things are so overpriced, holy shit."
"And tasty as fuck, i thought you'd like it," he smiled, smile growing even wider as she flung her arms around him, hugging him close.
"You're the absolute best, thank you Jeremiah!" Squeezing her arms around him, giggling contently as he hugged her back warmly.. She pulled it out of the box, a white cupcake with pink and white marbled frosting and unicorn shaped multicolored sprinkles, all wrapped up in a white and pink umbrella patterned wrapper. She took a big bite out of the corner, absolutely melting at how sweet it was, a pure overload of vanilla and strawberries and sugar.
"You spoil me so much."
"Anything for the birthday girl. Dude, Owen is gone, want to go hang out for the rest of your fucking birthday? We can still catch a movie or some shit?"
"Hell yeah, but you're paying, mister!"
