Dorthy had never laughed at what he wrote. It was one of the things he loved about her. No matter how tongue-in-cheek his writing was, she would take it as if the most important person on earth wrote it.  He always felt seen, when she read what he wrote. She'd only laughed at his writing when he'd purposely made it fit her sense of humor. Her laughter had been airy and almost guilty, but it became a wild roar when he gave his approval. It was one of his best memories of her.

Her funeral had been a small, private event. The priest was a close friend and gave a message that touched everyone. The whole time, Ed was a mess. Sobbing and angry, he had to leave the room more than once to regain his composure. He wasn't sure he would survive. His grief was consuming him. He made a promise to himself that in his next life, he would find Dorthy again and protect her.
