Ezra Rodriguez is the cousin of Jeanette and Santiago. But you already knew that, just as you knew she willingly moved to the Remembauri border mountains, has two cats, and no familiar.

Perhaps you also figured out that she has star magic, and that she is closer to fey than a witch.

But I know you don't know she did have a familiar. His name was Lucian.

Did you gasp? Lucian wasn't originally Jeanette's familiar. But Jeanette and Ezra are similar enough that he was reassigned. This can truly only happen between families. Reassignment is rare, difficult, and dangerous.

If you need a cliche comparison, you can think of a familiar reassignment almost like a mate rejection in a werewolf novel. It's painful and tends to leave lasting scars on the witch, not the familiar.

Why?

Because Latsyr erases select memories of every familiar she reassigns, to avoid awkwardness between the new witch or warlock and the familiar.

As such, Lucian has no recollection of Ezra. No one in Eriscos does, except for Latsyr herself.

Now, the fey part is interesting. Witches are twice as prolific as true warlocks, and twice as likely to become fey-like instead of reaching their full witch power by the time they turn 26. Witches can be male, although by definition warlocks are only male. This identity structure becomes confusing very quickly. It's not nearly as clear-cut as other magical races. So I'll give you some classification examples.

Viviana Morales is a classic example of a powerful witch. She's female, has a familiar, and is capable of spells along with destruction.

Jeanette is an example of a typical witch. She's female, has average control over her powers and magic, and she has a familiar.

Santiago walks the line between witch and warlock. Most warlocks are better at potions than witches (ironic I know) but Santiago is notably average at potions. He received his familiar a touch early, and his extreme knowledge base and control over his power hint at his flexibility in terms of magical identity.

Ezra is a fey-like witch. She is still a witch, she is just more in tune with nature and stars than others, so much so that it became part of her power. Ezra can summon fragmented sparkles to use for observing the future or specific events in the present. Foresight is specifically a rare fey gift, which is prevalent in the Beaure family.

This brings us to witch-like fey. I do not have any specific examples, but basically, they are detached from nature and more in tune with books. Brandon does not qualify because he isn't obsessed with magical instruction books, but romances instead.

So there are all these magical definitions related to fey and witches

So there are all these magical definitions related to fey and witches. But at the end of the day, even Ezra will tell you they all come from the fey.

Except for Del and Fay. The cats came from Ilsadora, as a neighborly gift.
