I brushed my hair back out of my face, tears running down my cheeks. "Mom, please!!! I've never even met him! This isn't your life, it's mine!!!" "Callie, calm down." My mother's relaxed voice melted into my mind. 'Calm down'? Who does she think she is? She's making me marry someone I don't even know! "You know that The boy's family has much, much more money that us, and right now, we really need it. We have about 2,000 dollars to last us, and your father just lost his job. We have no other way to gain money. Shhh...." She was rubbing my back as I sobbed into her sweater. It smelled like smoke and river water. I wonder where she got it. "Callie, this is our only choice." I wanted to scream and punch her in the stomach, but I held back.

The next morning, I trudged down the stairs to get breakfast. When I got down to the kitchen, my mom and dad were sitting on the couch, staring at me. "What?" I asked as I grabbed a muffin from the top cabinet. "Callie, honey, we've been evicted."
