"My number dropped down to 12, I wonder what'll happen once it reaches 0." Lucy spoke, her friend Alexis was upset, he didn't know who to believe, should he believe Grace? Or Simon? Grace had dismissed the Apex to go their separate ways and permanently off the train since Simon 's demise. Everyone got ready that day to embark on a new journey; some went with their friends, some went alone, and some stayed. "I don't know, what if Simon was right? What if we die when we reach to 0?" Alexis worried. "Rumors say that the portal teleports you back home, Darrel saw his when he got his way out.", "The train tricked him, and it wasn't his way out, it was his way out to DEATH!" It was hard for Alexis to believe what he thought was a lie.
The two were tense and silent. "I'm not gonna stay here forever, I believe that I'll be back home when I get my portal. Maybe Simon was wrong, but even if he wasn't, I'm not gonna stay here and do nothing." Alexis was furious after Lucy said this and left. Alexis was always Simon's favorite, they bonded well, Alexis believed everything Simon said about the train., about the 'real' conductor. His number was 648 when he looked down and twisted his forearm to see it. Alexis furrowed his eyebrows, but then he was interrupted by the car door opening.
"I told you it was easy!" A blonde boy shouted leaping up and down, "Yeah we get it Henry." Abby was disgusted by what they had to encounter in the previous car they had been in. They wiped sticky-looking muck off their faces as the group moved toward the location where they believe Grace is. Yes, the situation was that bad. When they got to Grace's private room, she was packing a duffel bag containing her belongings. "Oh hey..?" Grace took a moment to look over the group, noting the gunk and bruises as well as their displeased expressions. "Rough trip?"
"Some chrome cops were on a run looking for some chrome kid." Faye spoke up, "The same reflections from a few weeks ago?" Grace questions. "Months prior. Keep in mind that you were stuck in your tape, and you are aware of how the time is different there." Abby responded. "Right." Grace looked down, remembering what happened when she was in her tape. "But no, they're different cops, and I believe they are hunting for a different kid." Dom confirmed. Faye noticed Carmen moving to sit down onto a cushioned seat next to Grace's large mirror.
"Still can't believe Simon's no longer here, and that the Apex is... no longer the Apex." Carmen sighed, Faye sat next to her. She frowned, "Hey it's okay, at least we're still together, right?" Carmen had always felt secure around Faye, and Faye shared this sentiment. "Yeah." Carmen smiled, the two were interrupted when Henry asked an important question for Grace, "So Grace, where you gonna head?". Grace took a second before she responded, "I'm probably gonna head south, to fix the past mistakes I've made in the past cars." Dom smiled at that, impressed with Grace's progress.
Faye and Carmen moved over to Grace as the rest of the group left. "You sure you're okay on your own?" Since she had been with Simon for ten years, Faye expressed worry. "I think it's time for me to be on my own." Grace reassures Faye, the two of them had been excellent friends for a very long time and had taken good care of one another. "See you later." And with that, Carmen and Faye went to clean up in the communal showers.
She leaned against the sink and glanced in the mirror now that it was just Faye in the space. Her body was wrapped in a towel, and water was trickling from her hair. "Everything's changing." She thought, she had always loved being in the Apex. Despite the fact that she didn't really know the other children, she felt at home there and was happy to be with her close friends. She was going to miss all of their activities, raids, and training sessions. She was going to miss Grace and the other kids her age most of all. She will still be with her close friends, which is a positive.
People were already exiting the car, as the group made their way down from the escalator they said their goodbyes and waved to some other people they knew until they stopped in front of Grace. "The car should shift at any moment now." Grace stated when she looked down at her device, "Did you guys bring your devices with you?" All of them nodded. Then, when the car suddenly began to shift upward, everyone felt it. The older children activated their Gravity Boots to latch onto the ground, while the younger ones grabbed onto the car's sturdy structure to prevent falling.
The car shifted forward at full speed, "Fastest girl I've ever been in'' Henry joked, "This is the only 'girl' you've ever been in." The crew laughed as Abby gave a comeback. The group gave Grace a bear embrace and said, "We're going to miss you," as the car came to a halt. Since Grace was liked by the group and they were all close friends with her, saying goodbye to her was difficult, same goes to Grace. "I love you guys." Grace grinned and returned the group's hug. Grace approached Carmen after the hug broke and spoke into her ear while covering her mouth to prevent any lip readers in the group from understanding her. Carmen blushed and pushed Grace in a playful manner, the group stood confused.
As the gang made their way to the front exit, Faye asked Carmen, "What was that about?" Faye raised an eyebrow, "Nothing." Carmel smirked. Grace was aware that Carmen liked Faye, but she respected Carmen's request to keep it a secret, although it was so evident that Faye felt the same way about Carmen. "C'mon! What was it?" Faye bumped Carmen's shoulder with hers in a light manner, "I'm not telling you!" Carmen giggled. Because Faye rarely saw Carmen flush like that way, she thought it was cute whenever she did. Faye was curious to know what Grace said to Carmen in a whisper in order to understand what caused Carmen to flush so dramatically.
"Fine, but I'll figure it out soon." .
Dom unlocked the exit, the group walked out after taking one last glimpse of the mall car, they were really going to miss it. They came to a standstill and gathered around as the door shut behind them. "So I guess we just keep going until our numbers reach to 0? I mean if what Grace said was true." Everyone turned to look at their forearms as Henry asked a question, and all of their numbers extended past their forearms.
"It's gonna be a long trip then." Faye groaned. "Hey, don't worry guys, it won't be that bad. Remember the time when we got separated from the rest of the Apex? It'll be fun, and this time, who knows? We might get our portals home!" Carmen gives Faye and Dom a side hug while reassuring them. "Alright, let's get going." Abby said bluntly, the gang walked across the bridge. "First car." Said Henry, he turned the golden car door handles the other way to open the door.
