When Law came back home, he found you distracted writing on a piece of paper while looking at your phone at the same time. You were so focused, but the sound of the door closing made you jump, and smile at the sight of the man.
— Hey, Law! — you greeted him, sounding very happy and energetic for the first time after the accident. — While you were away, I couldn't sleep so I did some research on my condition... Well, I think I can call it "condition", right? Well, anyway... I was very curious, so I needed to search for answers...
— Research? Answers? — he raised an eyebrow, sitting on the dark leather chair in front of you while Bepo happily came to greet him as well. His tattooed fingers played with the dog's white fur, waiting for you to continue what you were saying.
— Ah, yes! — you showed your little notes. — Apparently, my condition affects some of my memories as we noticed, but maybe I can remember to do some things if my procedural memory wasn't damaged. Like driving or, I don't know, cooking, for example!
Your excitement was making Law feel very positive about your condition. And in fact, you were right. Even though you couldn't recognize some people or recall some memories, if your procedural memory was indeed intact as if you were thinking, you could do some things by yourself.
— So, what you're saying is... — he asked, waiting for you to finish your line of thought.
— I want to drive, please! — you placed your hands together, in a begging gesture. — I remember that I started learning when I was in college, so maybe I still remember, right? Since my memories from college are still there...
Law thought for a few seconds. It was risky, but... If he sat by your side and decided to take you to a quiet neighborhood to try to drive... It could give some positive results. Also, with your (E/C) eyes full of hope and happiness looking at him, the doctor couldn't say no.
Well, in the end, it'd be all for science and medical research, right?
— I mean, we could try... — the man started, but before he could finish, you jumped and hugged him.
— Thank you! Let's go! — you got up and rushed to get your jacket before heading to the door.
— Tomorrow. We'll go, but tomorrow. — he continued.
— Why? — you pouted unintentionally, stopping with your jacket in your hand.
— Because you barely had any sleep ever since you woke up at the hospital, so you can't drive right now. — he got up and walked towards you, placing his hands on your shoulders and helping you make your way to the bedroom. — Come on.
You yawned, as if your body remembered how sleepy you were. Letting Law guide you, you arrived and sat on the bed.
— But tomorrow, we'll drive, right? — you said, laying in bed and making yourself comfortable.
— Yes, we will. — he shut the curtains and turned the lights off. The doctor moved closer, getting the blankets to cover you in it — Sleep well, (Y/N).
It felt like your body could relax for the first time, knowing that you were secure with someone who would make sure you were okay. And with that, you fell asleep as soon as your head hit the pillow.
When you woke up, you could notice the sunlight entering through the curtains. You got your cellphone, that was placed on the nightstand, something that probably Law did, since you don't even remember grabbing your phone before going to bed.
It was 8 AM already, and you felt as rested as ever. It was the best sleep you had ever since everything happened. However, Law wasn't home. The little note he left on the fridge explained his absence, even though you already knew the reason.
"(Y/N), I didn't want to wake you up, so I just let you sleep. I left for work, but let me know if you need anything. You can call or text me anytime."
You texted Law to let him know you were okay, and started to make something for breakfast. It was a good opportunity to see if you remembered how to cook. And honestly, you didn't do very bad. For someone who lost almost all your memories from the past few years, you still knew how to cook pretty well. You had to pause sometimes, and do things slowly, but you did a good job.
It felt like a lifetime until Law finally came back home, only to see you already dressed, ready to get the car keys and drive. How could he say "no" seeing you all happy and positive about your improvement?
It was past the rush hour, so the streets were very quiet. Also, Law drove to a calm neighborhood to make sure you wouldn't hit anything... Or anyone. You both switched seats, and you placed your hand on the steering wheel, while Law kept a tight grip on the hand brake, just in case.
— Okay, let's go... — you said, more to yourself than to him, trying to prepare yourself. — Okay...
As your feet slowly let go of the clutch and the car started moving, you couldn't help feeling thrilled and excited. You kept driving at 10km, but it gave you a sense of freedom, of being able to others it seemed like something basic, but it meant so much to you.
— Law, I'm driving! — you exclaimed. — See? I still remember! I remember!
The doctor smiled seeing you do everything so automatically, like changing the gears so easily and not forgetting about the turn signals.
— I see, I'm proud of you. — he said without even thinking. The dark haired man wasn't one to scream to the world about his feelings, but once in a while, he allowed himself to let you know that he loved you and how proud he was of you and your achievements. — You're doing great.
You felt your cheeks getting warmer at his compliments, but you couldn't be distracted right now. So you smiled, giggling inside.
When you went back home, you had this great sense of accomplishment, and it felt like you took a huge step. It was only the beginning, though.
