~ Third person POV ~

Cross gasped awake from a nightmare, groaning while he moved a hand to be placed on his forehead. Looking on the side of his bed, it was empty. Of course, it confused the skeleton who shifted to be at the very edge. It was rather weird that he hadn't felt any positive aura. Even when Dream was gone, he was still able to feel one..But it was different this time, it confused and worried Cross. Had something happen to his boyfriend while he was sleeping.

Getting out of bed, he began searching their shared house, finding no trace of where his boyfriend could've been. It just made the already worried skeleton anxious and even more..Well- Worried. Why wouldn't it? His lover practically just disappeared while he was asleep. Suddenly, a hand was placed on his shoulder, now having a firm grip on it. Was it Dream? He was the only one who knew about this place anyway, though if it was him, why wasn't his aura there?

Turning a bit, he froze, staring in pure disbelief at what he was seeing. It was Dream, sure, but he looked a bit..Different, being entirely covered in goop like Nightmare. "D-dream?" Cross asked hesitantly, gaining a chuckle from the other. "Dream? Oh, no! Dream is long gone, it's just me now. Call me Shattered, why doncha?" Shattered grinned at the petrified look on the skeleton's face, cocking his head to the side. "Aw, you poor thing, did I already shatter one of prayers?" He questioned with a sickeningly sweet tone, his face showing how little he cared that his words struck Cross greatly. He knew it did, he was able to sense emotions after all.

"What? No..There's no way! Did you do something to him?!" Cross questioned with venom in his voice, Shattered bursting into laughter before moving away. "Did I do something to him? Heavens no! He did something to himself! With a bit of encouragement, why do you think I'm here? Your precious little Dream is right in front of you! Though, he necessarily isn't." The goop slowly slide off of his body, revealing Dream's pearly white bones and his perfect outfit Cross loved oh-so much..

Cross could already feel tears prickling up in his eye sockets, his large figure beginning to tremble the more he stared at the other. He watched as the imposter moved closer, placing a hand to be caressing his cheekbone. "Cross? Why are you crying? Did I do something wrong?" Asked..The parasite while mimicking Dream's voice, watching as the dull skeleton fell onto his knees while still staring in pure disbelief. "No..There's no way! He wouldn't..He wouldn't just leave me like this! He isn't like that..H-he.." Cross broke into tears, 'Dream' brushing them away with his thumb.

"Oh darling..Dream's dead. I wouldn't be here if he was still alive, I wouldn't be here." Shattered snickered, getting shoved away in return. "Just shut up! I refuse to believe a single word that comes out of your mouth!" He got back onto his feet, glaring sharply at the other. He knew everything the other said was true..And he knew the parasite knew he did. Though he still hoped that maybe, just maybe, Dream was out there...He knew he wasn't, he knew the one he had loved was right in front of him, being lost forever.

~ Omg time skip.. ~

Years had passed ever since Shattered welcomed himself into Cross's life, the poor skeleton going back to his old ways, being distant and secretive. Who could blame him? Some parasite practically took over his boyfriend's body and was trying to get him to love it just as much as he loved Dream..Of course, he wouldn't. He only loved Dream and him only, not some imposter. Now, the monster was in front of him, being in his lover's form..He knew why, it was only to make him remember that the thing in front of him wasn't his boyfriend, wasn't the one he fell in love with. It became incredibly obvious that Shattered grew to love Cross, perhaps it was because he took Dream's body, making him feel how much the deceased skeleton loved the other? Who knows, not like it mattered.

"You seem to be in deep thought, what is it about?" Asked the skeleton who just got a huff in response, of course he did. It wasn't anything he wasn't used to, Cross wouldn't speak a word around him, usually leaving to go elsewhere. He knew he would go to different AU's to see other Dream's, to know he possibly could find someone like his beloved. Though Shattered wouldn't allow it, he never did. Why would he? Cross only needed him and him only, no one else. Letting out a sigh, he turned around to leave. "Alright then, you don't have to talk to me..I understand you miss him, though that shouldn't stop you from expressing yourself." Stated the shorter skeleton, beginning to walk away. "..Stop trying to weasel your way into my life." Looking back, he could see Cross glaring at him. "You'll never be him, you'll never be the one I love."

Venom had laced his voice, feeling hatred for Shattered. Those words stung, of course they did. Though he didn't care, he didn't care if they hurt the beast in front of him. Huffing, he left as Shattered stood there heartbroken. Cross had went to an abandoned AU, sighing. Why did life always slap him in the face? Of course he knew the other wouldn't immediately come after him, he never did. The skeleton was happy with that, he didn't have to worry about him..He didn't have to worry about anything. Being lost in a daze, one of his twin daggers appeared in his hand and found its way up to his chest. Without a second thought, the blade pierced through the fabric of his clothes and the bone being in front of his soul.

The blade easily dug its way into the soft makeshift organ, it slowly beginning to crack. Finally, Cross broke free from his trance, though it was already too late. He was dying, he was the cause of his own demise..Would he see Dream in the afterlife? Tears rolled down his cheekbones, a smile making its way onto his face. Accepting his fate, he pulled the blade away and fell onto his knees, dusting away. Shattered felt the lost of aura, knowing what it meant. Cross died, probably to be happy with his actual lover. It didn't stop tears from rolling down his cheekbones, his figure falling onto the wooden floor. Had he not been good enough? He tried his best letting the other adjust, to know someone else loved him. He should've expected this outcome, would it have been better if he had stayed in Dream's form when returning? Would it had made Cross believe his boyfriend was still there? No, no it wouldn't, he wasn't that stupid. That didn't matter, not anymore. He was gone, he was never coming back.

Being gone forever to join Dream in the afterlife.
