_____________

HER LETTERS WERE THE only thing he looked forward to these days. He didn't want to think of them as the only thing keeping him alive in the dungeon-like cell they kept him contained, but who was he kidding? She was the only thing, the only one , he had left.

Her feminine scrawl, the way she put x's above her i's instead of dotting them (why she did that would remain a mystery to him), how she always sprayed perfume on her letters like she was afraid he would forget her scent. He wouldn't. He could never. Her scent and image were branded on his minded for the rest of his days. That, he was sure of.

She never visited though, not that he wanted her to. It was too dangerous for her and her family, being only her grandma and older brother. Involving the only two people she had left, him excluded, into his mess was something he was trying to avoid at all costs.

So, for now, he was content with just knowing about her day, week or sometimes, when she was too busy to write him once a week, her month. Those times were the most excruciating, when he'd find out there'd been no mail for him that week or the next one or the one after that. The first, and only, time that'd happened he'd been so scared they'd gotten a hold of her or her family that he got into a huge fight with an inmate, and got sent to the SHU for two weeks.

She was the reason why foolish men like him dreamt up time-machines and second chances. Her screams the only thing echoing through his head before he closed his eyes at night. Her letters his only reason to keep pushing forward.

Until the day they stopped coming.
