Day 4 :
nalugu ( haldi on your language) Indian weddings are usually considered as sacred ties between two families, therefore it is a very expensive affair. This is when relatives both distant and close come together to give their wishes and blessings to the wedded couple. All the members of the family wait for this occasion eagerly.
The ritual of cleansing and purification, Nalungu is usually done on the night before the actual wedding. The bride and the groom are made to sit in mats and tree trays are kept near them containing turmeric paste, kumkum, scented oils and a mixture of lime and turmeric in water (Aarti). The ladies come one by one, keep the kumkum on the foreheads of the couple and apply turmeric paste on their feet, legs, hands and cheeks. After everyone is done, the older ladies in the family show the Aarti around the couple.
This ritual is one which brings the families of the bride and the groom together. There are games for the people present, which were played traditionally and the ladies sing songs during the Aarti. A ritual which keeps everyone occupied and entertained is the Nalungu! Despite all differences, some things that hold us together as Indians would be traditions which have been followed till now and for generations to come!
In our wedding turmaric is one of the must ingredient we use because The color yellow of the haldi paste signifies beauty, fertility and purity, and it also wards off evil, there by preparing the couple for life together and blessing them with good luck.
