This all began a few years ago, I remember it being a quiet, cold night. I was sitting alone on the pier, relaxing and taking in the scenery over the frozen lake.
From what I remember, no one ever went towards the center of the lake, everyone always told me there was some sort of monster there.
At some point I saw a girl slowly making her way across the ice, slipping and sliding, falling all over the place. I got up and went to see if she was ok but it turns out she was laughing, I approached her slowly asking: "Are you ok ma'am? Is everything alright?"
Upon closer inspection she seemed to be wearing some sort of hospital gown, she had no socks, shoes, hat or gloves on to keep her warm. I took off my coat and put it around her, standing her up. She held onto me and I escorted her off the ice into the cabin near the lake.
Once we arrived I lit the fireplace and searched my bag for food.
"Asa." The girl said
"Excuse me?" I replied, confused
"My name is Asa." She said as she stared right at me. "What is yours?"
I stood up and offered her a sandwich from my bag. "My name is Jack, Jack Williamson." I continued. "Do you know where you are? Where your home is?"
Asa shook her head.
"Do you think if I showed you around town that you'd know where you are?" I asked politely.
Again Asa shook her head.
I took a few minutes to think. "Ok. I think I know what we're going to do. For now we're going to sleep, it's late and it's very cold outside. I'll take you up to the town and from there we can see if you remember any places." I said kindly, offering my hand to help her up.
"I like that idea." Asa said, taking my hand and standing up.
I helped her up and went over to clean off one of the beds in the cabin. "Alright, you can sleep here, if it gets too cold feel free to come into my bed with me." I said while laying in my bed, stretching a bit to get comfortable.
The last thing I saw that night as I closed my eyes was Asa laying in her bed. Not too long after however before I fell asleep I did feel her crawling into my bed and holding me. I held her as well. Even though she was a stranger I felt confident in my assumption that she wasn't dangerous, and was just lost.
That was our first night together. The beginning of what would be the best four years of my life.
