chapter one

the bell dismissing the school for their next periods rang across the hallways. having not memorized his schedule yet, ren took a peek at the sheet of paper falling out of his binder. he silently cheered, he had a free period next, which meant he could go get a snack, study in the library, or do practically anything as long as it was allowed in school. he hoisted his book bag up on his shoulder and walked slowly to his locker, hoping he would see nyra there. clicking his lock open, he placed his book bag on the top shelf of his locker, then began rummaging through his backpack for his headphones. he aggressively slammed his locker door shut. he was fuming mad because he couldn't remember if he had put his earbuds in his backpack or not that morning before he left. even if he did, he couldn't seem to find them in his black hole of a backpack. he slammed his head on the metal door, fumbling with the lock to put it back in. he scanned the crowd for nyra. since their lockers weren't in the same hallway, he could only hope to see her in between classes.

"hey, are you okay?"

the soft voice startled him, causing him to jump back from his locker. he quickly turned his head to see aidan standing behind him, a worried expression plastered to his face.

"oh, um, yeah, i'm uh- okay- uh-"

he fumbled embarrassingly with his words, his face heating up slowly. he couldn't understand why he always acted like this around aidan, but he definitely didn't like it.

"i just wanted to let you know," aidan started, "that the my left earbud is always available for sharing if you ever wanted." 

he added a flirtatious intent to his comment, but ren being ren, he was oblivious, and just stuttered off an excuse before skittering away into study hall, face the colour of a stop sign.

ren, jogging over, hadn't noticed nyra talking to one of her friends. he wasn't focusing on who it was, he just needed to talk to nyra. he picked up his pace but then slowed down as he came closer to their conversation. he tapped his best friend on the shoulder and flashed her a wide grin. "hey. what's up? i've been looking for you all day," he stated, totally ignoring the other person's presence. nyra turned away from the other girl to greet ren. she knew it was rude, but sloan wasn't the type to hold a grudge. she took ren by the arm, and walked away. 

"i wasn't in class today. school can be really boring when you know all the answers. it also doesn't help that miss johnson never picks me."

ren nodded in agreement.

"being as smart as you are, nothing must phase you anymore. school sucks for me because it's too hard, but it must suck even more when it's too easy."

his eyes flitted over to the outfit that his best friend was wearing that day; usually he would be the fashion friends, giving advice and whatnot, but he couldn't think of much to say about her outfit today.

"love the fit," was all he said. "halloween is tomorrow, remind me of your plans again?" he said, casually sliding to a different subject, also still trying to forget about his 'aidancounter' (aidan encounter) from this morning.

nyra smiled. "well, i'm going as harley quinn, and i'm going with our friend group, like we always do." she did a double take. "do you have other plans?" she fidgeted with her belt behind her back, anxiously awaiting her friends answer. 

"just making sure." he confirmed. "do you want to go walk down the street for something to eat? or do you have a class you need to be at right now?" he put his hands in his pockets, pulling out a coupon for free ice cream and smiled sheepishly."we can always save this for later, but it will expire soon, so we need to start hanging out more!" he exclaimed dramatically, putting the hand with the coupon over his heart, trying not to laugh.

nyra looked down at her english book. she would have to be back here in 30 minutes. she looked back up at ren. 

"oh please, when have i ever turned down ice cream?" she asked. "meet you outside." she said, then spun on her heels and turned down the hallway, then look over her right shoulder. "be quick, gotta be back in 30" then continued walking.
