THE NEW BEGINNING

Chapter One

Sophie sat under the Panakes tree stroking Luna's soft belly the young alicorn nuzzled her hand when she stopped and whinnied in protest 

"your just like your mama you know that" she said to horse "you always want attention"

Luna snorted and rolled over shaking out her main as she stood FLY? she transmitted tilting her head 

Sophie shook her head "sorry Lunes i... have something i cant miss" she said fiddling with the flowing sleeve of her red gown it was something far more fancy than she would ever have worn but...today was a special occasion she even let Vertina talk her into wearing makeup not to mention her twisted half up hair and the fact that she was wearing HEELS well... they were short boots but they had a much bigger heel than she would've liked 

FLY! FLY! FLY! FLY! FLY! Luna transmitted trotting around Calla's Panakes whinnying loudly Sophie rubbed her temples 

"who knew teenage flying sparkly horses could be this annoying" she groaned trying to block Luna's new round of transmissions

"I'm pretty sure its in the word teenage" Edaline Sophie's adoptive mother said coming up behind  her laughing as Luna bumped her "but I'm also pretty sure you cant grumble about teens yet being your only seventeen"

"my birthdays in a few months" she argued 

Edaline nudged her gently smiling "and eighteen's a big change?" 

Sophie's mouth twitched at the corners "i thought you and Grady agreed to give us some room?" Sophie asked changing the topic though she wasn't sure if this one was much better 

Edaline reached into her pocket and pulled out a small silver box "i wanted to give you this" she said handing it to Sophie "go ahead open it"

so Sophie pulled on the pale blue ribbon letting it fall as she lifted the cover to reveal,,, "its beautiful" she said hating the catch in her voice she lifted up the ruby pendent on a silver chain it was raw and not shaped or perfect but that's what made it all the more stunning the ruby turned catching the light in a million different ways "thank you" she said pulling Edaline into a hug 

when they finally pulled away Edaline's eyes were watery she tucked a piece of Sophie's hair behind her ear "I'm just so glad you like it" 

"are you kidding I'm never taking it off" she said as Edaline helped her clasp the necklace around her neck 

when Edaline finished clasping it on her neck she leaned back and held Sophie's shoulders "I love you Sophie"

"i love you too mom" adding the mom part had started to become natural for Sophie even though it used to be hard not because she didn't think of Grady and Edaline that way just because she was still getting used to living in the lost cities 

Edaline cleared her throat and stood up "i should probably go inside" 

"probably" Sophie agreed studying the Panakes blossoms 

a few minutes after Edaline had left a handsome elf in a blue embroidered jerkin shimmered into view in the pastures his ogre bodyguard merged into the shadows probably trying to give them space "Keefe" Sophie whispered as she stood to meet him
